Any way to add an item to an Amazon order within minutes of placing the order?

I placed an order for several items today with Amazon UK. Within a few minutes of getting the confirmation e-mail but well before they could have dispatched the order, I realised that I wanted to add a relative low cost item (£12) so took a look in 'My orders' to see if there was any way to add an item but there doesn't appear to be such an option.

So rather than pay for delivery for the additional item, I had to delete the order, wait for the confirmation that it was cancelled, then go back and find each of the items one by one and drop it in my inbasket, including the additional item and then place that new order.

It seems crazy that there isn't a way to put a freeze on a order within (say) 10 minutes of placing the order and then being allowed to add an item within a window of (say) an hour before the order is automatically cancelled if it isn't amended and/or confirmed.

It would also make sense that if you cancelled an order, they could drop those items into a wishlist (perhaps called 'cancelled order') in your inbasket section so you could select some or all of the items from the cancelled order, instead of having to search for each one in the catalogue from scratch.

In case you're thinking of suggesting that I e-mail those comments to Amazon, I can't find anywhere on their UK website with a 'contact us' e-mail address for customer comments.

Responses to the question in the thread title and any other comments welcome.

No you cannot add items to an order, what I done in the past is contact customer service on chat, they cannot do it but what they do in most times is to create a new order with that item and refund the shipping charges or they cancel and recreate the order for you with all the items.

Thanks, that's an idea I'll bear in mind for my next order!

Just last week I put an order for 4 items and spotted a 5th item i wanted about a hour later...i had received confirmation email etc by this time...i just went to my orders and cancelled the order as it hadnt dispatched and added the 5 items into my basket and placed order again. Received the cancellation email and the new confirmation email. The 5 items arrived today.

Interestingly Amazon themselves will hold up an order while they combine two orders together to save themselves postage.

So say you order 4 items that are in stock as one order with free delivery then an hour later create a new order with free delivery for one more item which is out of stock Amazon may combine the two orders and not dispatch the first order until the out of stock item is back in stock.

Pretty sure you can cancel or change an order at no extra cost right up until it ships. Did it myself only recently.

They've just done the opposite with my recent order (split it into two shipments) which is going to cost me an extra €3.95 via Parcel Motel though the delivery of both shipments will be free. I ordered five items, all 'in stock' and all 'fulfilled by Amazon'. When checking out, I ticked the box to bundle all of the items into one shipment specifically because delivery is to PM in NI and I'm in no particular hurry with the order.

Yesterday they informed me that they have shipped four of the items and the fifth item (which they still claim is 'in stock' in their catalogue) will ship 'as soon as those items become available'.

Were the items not eligible for "Free super saver delivery" to Ireland? MOst "Fulfilled by Amazon" items are free postage to Ireland once order is over £20, Why use Parcel motel?

And I wondered why one order took ages only to have the items from two orders packed into one order, you can't win. I even go as far now as waiting for an order to dispatch before making another order, but then I don't use Parcel Motel.

Above a certain value, the saving in VAT (UK vs. Irish) pays for the Parcel Motel charge, this order was well above the threshold.

When you are checking out in Amazon and you set the delivery address to the RoI, they increase the pricing to reflect RoI VAT. It's done in a way that you won't notice, I think they split out the VAT as a smokescreen so you don't notice that the gross (tax inclusive) price has gone up.

Amazon pay VAT to the Irish revenue commissioners because their shipments to the RoI are above a certain threshold, smaller retailers charge UK VAT.

Shipping from different Amazon warehouses I'd say
