Does anyone know if the new metro north is COMPLETELY separate to the luas or do they link up?

It's supposed to link up to the Green line at Stephens Green. Works have already been put in place for the underground station beside the current Luas stop if MN actually goes ahead.

It was supposed to be an underground station for DART underground and still should be imo.

MN deserves to be scrapped ans DU should proceed straight away but that's for another thread.

Luas and Metro are v compatible . Metro is just a double length higher capacity Luas.

It's a pity the morons in charge of this state can't make a plan and stick to it, also a pity they don't understand the difference between an investment/stimulus and an expense. If they'd started this in the 00s instead of constantly re announcing it and dithering over this part or that, it would be running now. Instead the cash was wasted on short term tax cuts, extra 10ers and 5ers on children's allowance and welfare long spent and then right into the coffers of AIB and BOI at the end.

The most outrageous plan (by the muppet now partially in charge of finance...God help us) was abandoning it and proposing a Luas extension to the airport that did a turn at the roundabout dumping passengers outside the complex instead of in a nice station under the terminals. Cheaper short term was the excuse for this incompetence, that's the Irish political classes whole problem, no vision or foresight no long term thinking, can't see beyond the next election. Why borrow for a stimulus package you won't see benefits of for 5-6 years when you can use the money on local pork barrel projects and buy votes with welfare top ups

With the fragile recovery we have going a big infrastructure package would be a great economic stimulus. The dithering should stop and they should just get it going, they'd have all party support.

    You are generally right.

Well it depends...From what I understand Metro North on its own was planned to terminate at SSG with a turnback loop. Engineers Ireland who I assume had a fair amount of input into the project suggested to continue the tunnel the relatively short distance to grand parade and link in with the green line there as there is the space for a portal and will cause the least amount of disruption. This idea then became known as metro south. Work is required to extend the platforms on the green line to accommodate the longer metro trams. This is planned to happen while metro north is being built.

Its all in this video somewhere:
