Lionsgate is planning to wrap up the “Divergent Series” with a television movie and a spinoff series, Variety has learned.

Negotiations are in the early stages, but instead of having “The Divergent Series: Ascendant” open in theaters next year, the studio wants to wrap up the film series on the small screen, according to an individual with knowledge of the situation. That would then segue into a standalone television series set in the same post-apocalyptic world.

That's kinda interesting. I saw all those movies in the cinema, and they were awful sludge of the highest order, but this is quite unusual. God knows why they thought the last book needed to be spilt in two.

This is hilarious, Lionsgate got greedy and it has hilariously backfired!

That's a shame if it happens I enjoyed both of the first films.

Agree with this. Look at the Hunger Games - they split the final two movies and the end result was two mediocre, lack-lustre, and entirely forgettable movies that should have been a rollercoaster of a single movie.

Good enough for them to be honest, hope it helps put an end to the cash grabbing nonsense that has been plaguing source adaptions the last few years.

Fans of the books have said that the last movie was 95% of the last book, they just changed the ending to leave it open for a sequel, which makes this even more hilarious. Lionsgate are getting like Sony, desperate for a massive franchise.

Not sure if I watched the last one, they are so forgettable and similar to other YA stuff.

Anyway this is great news if it stops the studio practice of splitting third books in half. Although if what ps3lover said above is true, I wonder if they ever really intended to release this theatrically? Maybe the plan was always to "wrap the series up" in a tv movie/pilot for a series.

No, it was always supposed to go to theaters, the plan was to film it this summer but that fell back due to the box office of the last movie. It was originally supposed to be called Allegiant Part 1 and Allegiant Part 2 but that changed.

I really don't know why. The hunger games suffered for splitting it in half too. Harry Potter made it work well cos they picked a good ending point for part 1, then went for it in part 2.

Hard to get how the messed up so bad.

The were up against the other YA series Hunger Games and Maze Runner and yet the first two films actually got me interested.

Then the latest was just ... I dunno.. just like a level or 3 below the previous films in the series.

    Shame that. What a waste.

Would being on Netflix or any online streaming site count as a tv movie?

I doubt the film's main cast will do a tv show, Shailene's career is thriving on the up

Has Allegiant Part 2 / Ascendant (which ever it is called) already been filmed?
