Looks like a private homeowner got the trees cut down . Is that legal? . It is a public park . I assume it illegal. Thanks

Which park? The big one next to Leisureland?
Go into the Salthill Gardai station and ask if a Felling Notice have been applied for.

All sorts of stories going round about this: apparently it was done late at night, the guards turned up but the workmen showed them a permit which now looks like was a fake!. How did the guards not figure this was suspect doing it so late at night.... I took a pic :)

The other reason cited is anti social behaviour. Local residents have been to the gardai and council.

How are trees anti social? Or are youngsters hiding in the trees? What kind of trees are they anyhow that have been chopped down?

Bushing doesn't only happen behind churches, you know.

    They sure are! Ha ha
The type of trees that are replanted will be important. Can alleviate this Yoof drinking/Bushing if it is a problem here.

Was anyone ever held responsivble for culling some 100's of year old trees (oak?) in eyre square and replace then with 14M euros worth of chineese concrete ??? doubt it

Local residents in Knocknacarra are reportedly “up in arms” after discovering the trees had been felled and that the fallen trees had been left in situ.

Would have thought it would be Salthill residents?

It would be difficult to cycle through that.

There was a story last week about anti-social behavior around there, and word was that the Gardai were more or less uninterested in the issue, so maybe one resident decided to take matters into their own hands to move it away from their back door.

Salthill residents are happy that the bushing crew have moved on.
Knocknacarra residents aren't so happy to welcome them home.

Yeah, the bushin' crew won't have anywhere to sit now, like tree stumps. Oh wait...:P

The felling of the trees took place on Saturday for most of the day..I was nearby and it was very noisy. I passed a couple of galway city council vans on Friday evening although they have since said there was no permit...or something along those lines.

Tribune reports: Garda and Council investigations are ongoing into the felling, which is understood to have been carried out by a private contractor on the instructions of a local resident. The resident in question had approached the Council to discuss if the trees could be cut down, but “absolutely no” permission was granted.

The contractor will take the can as it was up to him to ensure that the customer owned the trees/land. I doubt if it's anyone local or reputable as they would of checked.

The private individual who engaged the contractor and the contractor should be made replace the trees like for like....I sincerely doubt this will happen tho knowing the state of the council

Plus the Council shouldn't allow Leylandii trees to grow like that. Maybe the homeowner had a decent view, light etc & the trees were just allowed to grow way too tall. I can see both sides in this.

    They're not Leylandii.

Couldn't they just import some poison ivy or something and plant it there. Rather than cutting trees down.
Not sure fi there would be a more local/indigenous alternative.

Also not sure how badly that stuff spreads, but might just help prevent anybody else from enjoying the park.

"Anti-social behaviour" has been going on there for over 30+ years, Gardaí never done anything about it tbh

Theory good. Practice: Nooooooooo! Poison Ivy in Ireland? Actually introducing any more non native species in Ireland is a disaster. Places are already overrun with 'ornamental' species that ran amok.

If it curbs the anti-social behavior up there, good riddance to the trees. When I used to walk through there as a short-cut in the mornings, place used to be full of rubbish (cans / bottles). During the evenings, you could hear people drinking up there from quite a distance, must have been a nightmare for local residents.

In fairness, the Garda station is across the road. They can easily do a walk through while they are having a smoke break or whatever (although people would probably complain about that as well).

Any Landscape Architects or designers out there?
What would the ideal replacement tress be here and rough guide on the cost? (Presuming replacement tress will be of a couple of years old when planted.)

Nothing could replace the monkey tree

And this is what used to p1ss me off. Right under the nose of the Garda station, yet constant anti-social behaviour. I have no issues with people drinking a few cans, but to leave rubbish / cause a nuisance is not on. Residents have a right to live in peace

(Before anyone attempts a smart-arse reply, I don't live in that area)

A simple garden hose would of done the trick
