Did this race last year (long course) in pretty bad conditions; what an exhilarating morning it was. Would seriously recommend!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,423 ✭✭✭fletch

Have done this race the last 2 years and also highly recommend it.

The monsoon conditions last year just added to the buzz!

Decided to give it a go as well! How bad can it be :)

Damn it, it's clashing with something else I was looking at but I really want to try a hill race and the 13k option looks perfect....

I am thinking the same thing! (except for the clash). Would love to do the 26k but I think it'll be too soon....

    Hi all,

The event is still 3 months away but we are approaching 60% capacity already due to unprecedented demand.

If you wish to take part in this event, it would be wise to sign up sooner rather than later to avoid any disappointment as the event will be sure to sell out.

    Thanks,

    RTL team and DWMRT

Is the short course suitable for someone who's never done a hill run before? what kind of times would people finish the 13K in?

    Hi Firedance,

Yes, most people new to this just walk uphill and jog along the flatter and downhill sections. We had some people coming in about the 3 hour mark last year for the short course. The route will be fully marked and marshalled so no need for any navigation skills or anything like that. Just come along and give it a shot and the chances are, you will have a ton of fun.

    Thanks

    RTL team and DWMRT

Bit the bullet and registered for this, a bit terrified but hopefully will be the start of a beautiful relationship with trail/hill running!

I've just signed up too! I needed a post marathon goal and I've been thinking about doing some mountain running for ages so this is perfect.

This was one of my first trail races, and you will have a great time. Even last year with torrential rain!!!. I'm signed up for the long course this time around. Double the fun!

Hi all, just a final note on capacity. We are now at 90% full and will be full in the coming days. The event is still over two months away which is crazy. There will be NO WAITLIST this year so if you want to sign up, do so now. Thanks for all the support - DWMRT

Just signed up to the 13Km, with Mrs MunsterBear, and the sister. To think she thought she was just coming over to Dublin to celebrate Babybear's 18th....

RTL 2016 is now sold out. There will be no waitlist this year. Thanks you all for your support and see you all on Nov 26th!!

Typical, just went to register there and blamo...sold out. Damn you (me) and my god damn procrastination.

2 years in a row! Best of luck with it everyone.

Arg, had been thinking about doing this after DCM. Obviously thought for too long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,292 ✭✭✭DubOnHoliday

Will run most of the long course early this Sunday morning if anyone is interested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 1986kennyd

We done just under 20k of it last weekend, great course but theres a few slippy parts, mainly the boardwalk. Looking forward to next week now, enjoy the training run!

Does anyone know what time I'd need to get to lamb Doyles for this? It says registration is at 9 but the short course start isn't til 11.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 1986kennyd

You should be ok arriving after half 9 I'm guessing. 9 o clock reg will probably be more for the 10am long course starters.

Long course start is 11, short course at 11:10 (early start for long course only is 10)
We would encourage you to get there as early as possible as we have record numbers this year and registration will be manic to say the least!
    Thanks

    just seen about this now..

i regularly run up around three rock... will this race mean closures or obstruction to other users of the area? (don't mean to sound grumpy, i'm not, but i am curious...)

would have quite liked to enter but didn't know about it. do you ever advertise by poster up around the area?

hope it goes well, sounds like a good day.

    Hi Cravings,
Pity you missed out this year. Check out the FB page next summer for details of the 2017 event.
None of the mountain or roads will be closed at all, there will just be extra activity, especially along the course. The course will be marked with red and white tape and marshals so it will be clear. The runners will get spread out quite soon so the impact of extra people on the hill will not be too bad.
If you are keen on hill running or would like to start off, check out www.imra.ie who will be running various races from January. They are a bargain at 7 each!
    Thanks,
    S2S & DWMRT

Enjoy the run tomorrow. Can't run it this year but really enjoyed this last year, weather and all. Hopefully I will get up and see a few crossing the finishing line.

I really enjoyed this run today! The perfect weather certainly helped. Thanks to all the volunteers.

Today was fantastic, couldn't ask for better weather. Great to be able to have fun and help the incredible work of the Mountain Rescue. Will definitely be back next year.

Only quibble which is nothing the organisers can do but a few of the faster 26km runners were very rude passing people. I know you're trying to get a PB or push for place. But it doesn't cost anything to have some manners.

This year I seemed to be passing a lot more short coursers/early starters than other years. Its not something I noticed too much in the previous 2 years but perhaps the fact that I've improved my times contributed. I was courteous to each person I passed but I dont know what could be done to prevent the two races colliding, other than having a totally different route for the short course. In its current format, if the short course started earlier, the faster long course participants would catch the slower short coursers before the decision point.
Absolutely loved today's race...perfect weather...sun even made an appearance and I set a 14 mins PB.

Fantastic race, my first mountain run, very well organized and thanks to all the volunteers who marshalled the course

I want aware we would be passed by long course speedies (and they were flying!) One of them set me off balance on that last downhill but that's not the organisers fault. I'll know the next time and be ready to move out of their way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,423 ✭✭✭fletch

Looking at the flyby, I think a marshal is needed at the last left hand turn along the "dream track"...a few people (myself included :o ) missed the turn and would have gained a slight advantage by going straight.
Fantastic race though...absolutely love everything about it. The jellies and the water at the stations were soo good!

My first RTL and really enjoyed today. A great mix of everything including nice dry trail and some nice mucky trail. Took 2 x falls which left me with a gashed quad and a sprained toe but that's all part of it - reckon I'll be sore tomorrow.

Most people I was passing moved to the side and I always gave a well done and a thanks to them and got the same in return.

@fletch - the Flybys are great - if I'm right you were 8 minutes in front of me, 6 of those coming in the last 4 miles - must be the shortcut you took ;) - seriously though you must have been absolutely booting down to the finish along a fairly technical section so that probably explains why you went along the "dream track" - nice going and well done!

Thanks...I wouldn't mind but I made the same mistake during an imra race before and it cost me a lot of places as the finish line was at the top of the concrete road so I had to run back up hill to the finish. TBH I kept a kind of even effort throughout this race and it definitely seemed to pay off in the second half when others were flagging, I was able to pass them.
Looking at the flyby, seems like you took a sneaky shortcut too in Cruagh Woods or maybe it was just patchy GPS in the forest :P
Seriously good time for your first outing in RTL! Knowing what to expect in a race like this definitely helps and it was my 3rd time doing it so it definitely gives an advantage. I remember the sting in the tail really catching me out in the first year as I thought it was all downhill from the time you turn left off the fire road on to the MTB trail

    Cheers.

That's where I took a fall and watch paused in the bang without me noticing for 2 minutes so there's a straight line there where I resumed the watch - it's bugging me that I've a messed up record of the race on Strava :)

I had done the short course twice so it was time to up the distance this year. I was more or less on schedule to do my estimated 3hr finish. However, that more or less fell apart when I hit hamburger hill in Cruagh. My legs got totally sapped and the return trip over Tibradden turned into a walk run and I finished just under 3:20. First time ever running that distance, so I'll be doing more practice ahead of next year. Well done to you all on such great running.

Great day for running in the hills yesterday. First time for me and really enjoyed. Stuggled on the uphills as didn't get that much training in but made up for it on the way down! Thanks to the volunteers and organisers, great setup. There's loads of photos from the run posted over on the facebook page if anyone is interested.

Fantastic race, really enjoyed it! Just wondering where these shortcuts were and why nobody showed them to me (only kidding) :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,936 ✭✭✭AdpRo

Great race yesterday, 3rd time doing the short course, one of my favorite races. Whoever they got to organise the weather this year should keep the job for life, couldn't have been any better.

Agree with the last left turn on the dream track, a marshal would definitely be a good idea there, I made the turn this year but missed it last year!
