Belts slipping rotary mower

Pz rotary mower overall good condition and well maintained, cutting perfectly last season. However today while attempting to top rushes it would only cut the weak stuff and would only 'tear' and pull any heavy blows. The belts were squealing so obviously they are slipping. I've been advised to tighten the nuts on the threaded bar, the one with the spring, to put more pressure on the belts, is this worth trying? Any experience of this?

Take it they sat tight all winter?
The belts probabley streched a bit tightin them up and should be perfect if not its time for belts

I'll squeeze them up and see how it goes, any idea are they a difficult job to put on new ones

from recollection its handy enough and being a pz its handy get belts for them have a bamfords rotary meself and it was awkward enough get belts for it as they're slightly different to pz ones.

Could be a bearing or something on the way out that's causing it to be harder to turn also. As suggested tighten or replace the belts. Give it a turn by hand also to ensure there isn't a tightness in the mower itself.

Loosen the tensioner then put the belt on the small pulley first and then the big pulley, mind the fingers though.
