Size of flat rooflight

    Hi all,

We have in our plans a flat rooflight in our kitchen/dining area - the external measurements are about 5m *1.4m and the room is about 42sq.m

The room is s/w facing and has a 3.2m wide sliding door plus large window on the west wall, and two largish windows on the southern side.

Are we mad to install such a large rooflight? I LOVE the idea of lots of light in our main living area, but am also terrified that we'll end up with too much glare and direct sunlight. Does anyone have a rooflight of similar dimensions? Do people generally install some sort of sun shade on these?

    Thanks

do you have a flat or pitched roof?

something like this is perfect for large open plan rooms with flat roofs

youre designer should be able to give you a sun / shadow analysis of how the roof light would impact on your room, its quite easy to do using google sketch up

    Thanks - it's a flat roof.

What is the difference between that rooflight and a flat rooflight (apart from aesthetics)?

This is the type of thing we've got quotes on so far ...

the main difference is the ability of the 'tent' style to span larger areas... plus the aesthetic of a higher ceiling/air space.

sydthebeat, I've always discounted those styles as they are more 'traditional' than contemporary, at least in my opinion. I always preferred the clean lines of a flat rooflight. But I see where you're coming from.

Aside, would that dome style need to have been specified in the plans at planning time?

Also, the flat ceiling is elevated to just below the height of the bedroom windows upstairs. I'd be wary that this structure would cut off the view from the bedroom.

From a size/sun light point of view, does anyone have any comments or feedback?

    Thanks
