Re-releases and the effects on original copies?

I have a question. I do not have many rare or highly valuable games but I am curious as to the effects of classic games being re-released on new consoles (Xbox live, PSN etc) and if this has a negative effect on the value of the original copy.

In your experience does the value of the original copy tend to go down when it is re-released on newer consoles? (Radiant Silvergun for example).

I personally don't think re-releases have much effect at all on the value of the original games. I think people realise these days that pretty much any game on earth can be reproduced to play on your pc etc and are able to separate the original cart/disc from the re-release and all it entails. I think in some circumstances it may have the opposite effect, the re-release of a game may spike interest in the original copy and make a certain game more desirable in collecting terms.

You only have to look at the Wii/WiiU Virtual Console SNES releases. Mega Man X3, Wild Guns, Demons Crest, Final Fight 3 and Dracula X all released within the small amount of actual SNES releases. They are some of the most expensive original copies to buy for the SNES and it's as if it was almost done on purpose because of the huge SNES catalogue they had to pick from. The prices for these have not been affected in anyway and in most cases have kept climbing.

The only game I ever really saw drop in price after a rerelease was Suikoden 2 on PSN and I think that was more the market realising it's not as rare as previously thought. Mostly re-releases do nothing to dampen game prices.

The really expensive games are only for the hardcore and the hardcore will have invested in getting the best original experience so aren't going to be bothered with a rerelease.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the PS2 comes to mind. Due to license lapsing, the PS2 version was going for around 400 at one stage. With the PSN/digital re-release, prices came down pretty swiftly.

I think each successive port of Ikaruga just got as expensive as the previous one.

Under Defeat though, cost a fortune on DC then the outstanding EU release on the PS3/360 was cheap as chips. Not sure if those have increased in price yet.

Mushi Mushi Pork/Pink Sweets was obscenely expensive for the 360, then they released a budget edition that was also region free, and was great value, but that edition had itself gained in value afaik.

Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence is another one I saw take a nose dive in price, I think it was after the release of a PS3 HD collection or something?

It's priceless to see modern titles nose dive in short order, with so many titles dropping from €70+ to sub €35.
Not too sure there are many future classics out there, to be worth a fortune in years to come.
But then, if we'd have known back then we'd all have stocked up on Super Metroid and Rtype III

I have seen Metroid Prime Trilogy drop since the VC release, it's in CEX semi regularly for €45.

Actually apart from new releases, has anyone paid a pretty penny for a game only for it to drop dramatically in price? (and should have sold it when the going was good?)

My Japanese copy of Under Defeat on PS4 :) Cost me about 85 euro. Then gets a budget western release of around 25 euro :)

The only other one I can think of is Xenogears. Bought it for 80 irish pounds from a dodgy import store that I didn't know had a bad reputation. They shipped discs so badly scratched the game wouldn't work and didn't bother sending me Chrono Cross which I ordered as well. Total shower. Ended up buying it again for around 100 pounds and then a week later EA/Squaresoft announced a reprint which tanked the price.

Game was a bit crap as well in the end.

Luckily I cashed out my collection of Metroid Prime Trilogies before the price dropped.

With some small irony, I was looking at picking up Ninja Gaiden Trilogy for the SNES, and saw some savage prices.
So, I checked out the reviews and they said that, while marvellous, the games were unchanged from the Famicom originals.
So, I have saved a few bob and bought those instead!
Well, the first two so far, €25 shipped from our friends in Nippon.
