Got refund cheque but filled in repayment bank details

Hi. I filled in bank account details, to go paper free. I got a cheque refund from revenue the other day for circa €6k. I am aware that I was due a refund, but am surprised that it came in the form of a cheque. Is it because of the amount?

If you ring them up and ask nicely they will cancel the cheque and transfer it into your bank account (assuming the bank account is already regd with them).

Filling out the direct-debit authorisation lets them take money OUT of your account, they still like to send cheques for refunds.

I filled my account details on ROS. This was prompted by a letter from Revenue requesting that they were trying to go paper free, and would stop issuing cheques eventually. I am surprised that they would issue a cheque again, even after having my bank details on the system

    Hi

The process of approving refunds of this size by Revenue can be a long one.

The chances are that this process had started a long time before you received the letter asking for bank details and too late to alter the cheque being issued. The process of automation I suspect.

I would not ask to cancel the cheque in case it means the refund has to be authorised again.

There might be an issue with the account details entered either. If Revenue are given an incorrect bank account, the refund may issue out, but will"bounce back" from the bank. There's no choice but to then issue the refund out via cheque.

When you entered the a/c details, did you receive any letter from Revenue, stating that these are the details now held on record?

My accountant entered it on ROS under my instruction. The BIC and IBAN are correct. It's a savings account. Would that matter?

    Yes

It should be a current account. Most savings accounts have restrictions over receiving transfers and the amount of money you can put into them.
