What could have happened?

So my objective was to push down a website on google that had negative feedback when googling the company name. It was all going ok, not an easy job by any means. I got it down to 8th.
Today i check and its 3rd, and now another article which would be negative to the business that was on page two is now on page one also!!!

What could have gone wrong or how would this have happened? Im kind of at a loss to explain how it would have jumped up like that?

Help, im learning and teaching myself. I would consider myself half clued in on these type of things, therefore i dont think i would have done anything personally to impact it as I go along here and dont understand how this happened:confused:

Does Google not return personalised results?
If you have been visiting the page often, I think this might affect your results.

**Ignore if you have already allowed for this.

Spurious you are a legend, thanks so much!! I had logged in to a gmail account so that must be it, logged back out and it back to 'normal'. Thanks so much for your reply.

Also SERP positions are not permanent by any means, the results will sometimes fluctuate significantly in the "Google Dance".

One reason for this is Google are testing to see what bounce rates are like for pages on a given query.
