Car popping out of 2nd gear sometimes.

Lately having an issue with the car, mk3 mondeo 6 speed 142k miles, popping out of second gear.

From looking online some are saying that it is either the syncros or forks and others are saying that popping out of gear is linkage related and has nothing to do with syncros in any way.

    Any thoughts to this ?

    Could be either.

I'd start by renewing the linkeage bushings.

Is that a big job do you know ?

Unless there's big play in the engine or gearbox mounts its unfortunately in the gearbox , had to do a Focus with low miles lately, popping out of 2nd on the overrun .

If it is worse case scenario, how much would I be looking at for a box to have its synchros done roughly ?

Just to get back to this, I have pin pointed that it is only happening on me when driving downhill and just in second. Goes into gear though no problem.

That's unimportant tbh. Check linkages, engine and gearbox mounts.

If the box itself is faulty it might be cheaper to fit another one.

Sound like maybe the syncromesh/selector fork.

Did you try asking a gearbox specialist?

I asked and they said it probably is the synchro.

Regarding a replacement box, getting one for a 2.5 mondeo won't be easy.
