My graduate son is getting desperate as office career he hoped for is not happening. He now intends to try to get into security work and is pricing courses. There are a lot of them online so if anyone could advise or pm me with recommendations I'd be really grateful. Can't afford to waste more money on useless courses!

I'd be interested in this too for same reasons as OP. Seems to be plenty of security jobs going, but not 100% sure how you go about finding a reputable PSA course provider for PSA licence.

    Thanks for any info.

Is there no one out there doing security work who can advise on this? He needs work badly for his own mental health. Not to mention that I'm supporting three chidren on a widows pension.

well I did my security course with (International Centre for Security Excellence) I received a distinction in the course. I paid 250 euro for basic guarding skills course. and then 90 euro to apply for the psa license. I didn't get the license yet they told me it would take up to 12 weeks to get it. when is comes to jobs, yes there is lots of jobs but, its not like if u apply for one security jobs and you will be called in for an interview. I applied for around 20 30 security jobs and only landed one interview and that was with G4S.

Experience is everything in the security industry. Everyone has to have the guarding and door courses completed to even work on a site.

Don't forget your first aid cert, safe pass and possible manual handling which will look good at an interview.

G4S are looking for around 100 new security officers at the moment. The money is 10.75 per hour and a 47 hour week is available.

He's doing the course this week. I'm disappointed it takes 12 weeks to get the licence. I'd hoped he'd be in work by the end of the month. Can he apply for jobs while the licence is pending or is there no point?

Good tips re training. Is it possible to get the First As training free or low cost does anyone know?

once you apply for the license you can generally work. A lot of places will require a current psa license though.

if he's unemployed tell him to get the SW to send him on these courses.

btw, why is it taking 12 weeks?

If you get the level 5 security that will really help you. The mayority only have the leve 4 so you'll certaintly stand out in that regard:)

As I say, The safe pass, manual handling are typically 1 day courses so it'd be wise to get them.

customer service and IT are all a big bonus.

As previously stated, experience is really the only thing that can get you up in the ranks.

Can i just ask this for my friend.

Which course is better? Door Security or Guarding Skills?

Does Door Security licence cover Guarding Skills? Or Guarding Skills licence cover Door Security? Or must do both together?

Depends on what kind of work your looking for. If door work you'll need the door security license. For everything else you'll need the guarding skills.
