Truck acceleration

Ok, I know this is strange, but was looking at the video of the truck attack in Nice.

    https://youtu.be/oRi2ZSXyWs0

Nothing graphic. What struck me was just the sheer speed of its acceleration. Out of nowhere , it just accelerated very quick. Does it seem like very quick acceleration to you ?

    Empty trucks are quite quick.

Seems like he was struggling to get it into gear and then finally managed it and off she went (unfortunately)

Lots of power and lots of torque = lots of acceleration if you pick the right gear.

What a morbid thread! Really ? You looked at that video and your overriding thought was, wow that accelerated quickly

It's morbid but this thread is about heavy vehicle acceleration

That particular truck was reported to weigh 19 tons.

Lots of Torque and low gearing means a massive shove when it spools up.

    Empty trucks can surprise anyone.

That's its max gross but it was more or less empty giving it the power to weight ratio for good acceleration.

Most trucks now are about 500 brake or more and buckets loads of torque. An empty artic can sometimes struggle to get all the power down in the wet.

The one in Nice was about 250 brake

I wonder if they couldn't hit the driver how long it would take to disable the Truck by firing into it. Cops in this Vid fire into the engine and seemingly stop it by destroying the radiator:

No way a Police 9mm or .40 pistol round would penetrate the actual block to a level where it would interrupt the engine, so like above the only way to stop it would be by penetrating the cooling system or some crucial ancillary. Which is a bit of a disaster if you're hoping to stop a rampaging truck quick-smart; it's gonna take a while to fail and actually stop moving.

Much better off placing your shots at the assailant like the French did.

A shot or two through the air tanks would be the quickest way to stop it.

they'd have plenty of it just from the start though :

    6M60-T2
    - peak power 270 PS (199 kW) at 2,500 rpm, torque 80 kg·m (780 N·m; 580 lb·ft) at 1,100 rpm

Taking out the radiator wouldn't have any immediate effect anyway, the engine would eventually overheat but big blocks can run fairly cool so will carry on for some time before failing. The Gardai tried to stop a Dualway coach that a nut job went on a rampage with in Dublin some years ago by shooting at it and failed to stop it.

And then they got out the spike strip,

Threw it as the coach as it was coming, but bounced off the side of it and right back at them.

    Plonkers.

Drove a DAF XF 530 (2350NM of torque) without a trailer and the thing was spinning the rear wheels in 5th.

Torque is irrelevant when comparing any automobile because we don't know nothing about the gearbox ratios.

It is always the available power that can be compared and that influences the acceleration. The torque figures given in specs are significant only when you pick the engine speed when the max torque is available - this can give some clues how flexible the engine is, but hardly any clue about the acceleration it can provide.

Would you not have a fairly good idea regarding a truck?

Sorry, it still is very difficult... ;)

My point is, for everyone - just don't quote the max torque figure - it's as useful as diameter of the steering wheel.

Something I've often noticed is Artics without trailers. They don't half tear away in front of your car. An ordinary car would actually have to work quite hard to keep into one!

Then again something weighing only around 8 tonnes but with a 15 litre engine, 600hp and over 3,000nm at it's disposal would still be sprightly..

I don,t get why the police did not shoot the tyres surely that would have been the quickest and easiest way to stop the truck. A 19ton truck on flat tyres is not going to go very far is it?

It'll go a lot further than you think, and could still run over people until it eventually ground to a halt, the best thing was to do exactly what they did and riddle the monster driving it.

Difficult enough to take out all those thick tyres when the truck is moving at speed, especially with the handguns they were using.

Even our little 3.0 Isuzu truck can go for the size of it. You won't be winning any traffic light GPs but with the way it's geared, you would probably push a few cars up the road, let alone mow people down.
