Negotiating with a second hand dealer (has premises) and he is offering six months tax with the car. Is this common?

Don't want to get into a "where's the tax you promised me" scenario. Thanks.

Dealers offer various incentives to sell cars. Doubt most of those incentives are really free though, just built into the selling price of the car.

If you don't want to chase him for the "free" motor tax then either don't collect the car with fresh motor tax or ask him to reduce the agreed selling price for the equivalent amount of "free" motor tax and you'll tax it yourself. ;)

Well that's the thing, why doesn't the dealer just reduce his asking by the price of the tax?

He can't have any margin on the tax. Ok, he might want to be introducing cost into the business for some reason. Or.... he wants to leave buyer dangling for the tax.

Because some people believe that if a car is out of tax for a year, they can't buy it as they will have to pay it back. Even tho the new owner is only liable for tax from when they purchase it. So it's just a marketing gimmick.

    Sounds about right.

Remember that others will fall for any old "free stuff" spin - eir are trying it at the moment by giving "free" sport while coincidentally and completely unrelatedlt raising their prices by €8

You sure the car doesn't already have tax on it? Also if it's low CO2 you could be talking about the grand sum of €100 for 6 months tax.

There's probably tax already on it
