My new word of the day - collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest.

    Does this happen in Ireland?
I've never heard of it but there isn't much arable farming around me.

The context in the article above is that unemployed in Spain gather discarded food after harvest for use in food banks and charities - it would be the imperfect bits that aren't marketable.

Not a chance. Fields littered with potatoes and carrots after the harvest.
