Anyone made a significant purchase online on either of these or similar sites? If so, what was the verdict on quality, value, customer service etc?

I used James Allen. I would highly recommend! Quality and value was great, I bought a diamond and got it set in a ring here. It was valued at over twice what I paid. I used the online chat before buying which I found good but didnt have any other contact with customer service.

I would stay away from Blue Nile personally. You cant see the diamond before you buy. Why spend so much money on something you cant see. There can be big differences in diamonds with the same ratings. Just be aware you have to pay vat to the courier before delivery (that is built into the price of a diamond you would buy here or from an eu website so it isnt more expensive).

Let me know if you have any other questions!

James Allen really does look to be a great website. I'm going to New York shortly, so can get ring made and delivered to their showroom in NYC which would only incur US sales tax and then avoid import duties.

And now that I think about it, my Air BnB for New York is actually in New Jersey, so I could technically get it shipped without having to pay sales tax...

Will be fun/terrifying trying to time that one!
