    Hi all,
So I want to take my mum away in October for a little break but finding it hard to choose where. I'm well travelled myself and know where I liked but it is for her so what I want doesn't matter lol she is in her late fifties, loves to just walk around looking at places, she's not into shows and tours etc have to bear in mind the time of year too
She's been to Barcelona, Edinburgh, London, Munich, Strasbourg, Dubrovnik and Jersey within Europe...
    I was thinking Italy maybe?
    Any suggestions are appreciated!
    Thank you

    Krakow?
Early October is nice weather there. Just avoid Nov 1st - everything, and I mean everything closes.

Prague is beautiful, lots to see and do and it's cheap to eat out and drink.

Highly recommend Amsterdam. Loads to do, very easy city to get around and very friendly.

Myself and my sister took our mum to Budapest last year-it was during the Christmas markets but I'm sure it's lovely any time of year. We didn't do tours but lots of walking around and we did the outdoor baths and this amazing wine cellar trip up in the Castle which was one of the highlights of the trip!

Wow thanks for all the suggestions guys. I was thinking either Rome or Amsterdam actually and whole I've been to Italy I haven't actually been to Rome! I'm assuming it would be nicer in October in that it will be quieter... And I'm all for good food!

I went at the end of October last year and it was lovely, not stupidly busy or too warm, just nice. Would go again in a heartbeat, there's so much to see and do

Sounds like a winner! Do you mind me asking where you stayed?

Very quaint and small hotel. Got a good deal, its in a quiet location (if I was going with the girlfriend I wouldn't have stayed there, ideal with my mum though). Very clean, comfortable rooms, only downside is no pub or restaurant there, but loads of places nearby

I walked everywhere, its not in the middle of nowhere, but others may have gotten taxis....

Oh don't mind walking, mam loves to just walk and walk and take things in. I would usually try restaurants anyway as opposed to the hotel. Thank you for the info, I'll have a look now.

I stayed in a hotel called Albergo Cesari a couple of years ago and it was fab. Amazing location about 2 mins walk to the pantheon and 5 mins to the Trevi fountain. Lovely breakfast served on the roof top terrace. We had a really lovely time.

Rome is a great walking city and would be a great choice. I would say in relation to restaurants that I would get a few recommendations. My experience of the touristy restaurants is that the quality of the food & service could be better. If you do go to Rome, then one restaurant that I would recommend near the Spanish Steps is

Another city that I would recommend is Madrid. I prefer it to Barcelona. It is not as touristy and is another great one for walking. In most restaurants there will be a lot more locals that tourists and I've always found the food to be excellent. We usually stay in this hotel which is in a quiet square but only a few minutes walk to the main sites such as Sol, Plaza Mayor, Opera & the Palace.

    I hope this helps.

I stayed in a nice place last September that's near the metro, tram & bus routes and well placed to walk to the pantheon or main shopping streets in 20 minutes.

Its called Le stanze di Orazio. http://www.lestanzediorazio.com

I could also really recommend Florence. Beautiful city with lots to see and do and easy enough to find your way around on foot.

Have a look at hotel San Carlo very near Spanish steps we stayed there September 2013 and found it easy walking distance to everything except Vatican where we got the metro from Spanish steps

    It has to be Rome.

You will both love it and the weather should be pleasantly warm with less tourists. Win win.
