Well lads and ladies. In the market in next few weeks for a new ( to me any way) diesel. Budget is 2.5k ish. Want to get as new in years as possible. I'd like an estate but a good size family hatchback would be suitable too.
So the cars I'm thinking of so far are
    1. Skoda Octavia.
    2. Vectra cdti Sri
    3 mondeo.
    4 Saab 93.
Wish I had more money to spend but I don't. My mileage per week is going to be about 600 miles so I want comfort. I want reliability. I want good handling. I want space.
I wouldn't rule out an mpv either. 2 litre max.
    Would a 407 pug or a c5 be good?
( not sure about reliability issues).

Any views and help would be appreciated .
    Thanks.

So you're effectively looking for the holy grail (comfort, handling, reliability and low running costs) for peanuts... That is not going to end good...

But I'll bet on 2.0HDI C5, preferably hydro.

I know. I'm aiming pretty high haha. I know I will have to compromise. But I will be looking after the car and giving it all it needs as time goes on.
Which engine in the c5 is best? Are the 1.6's like the 407 and focus?
    Cheers for the reply.

Just seen the 2.0 hdi. Thanks

has highish milage but at 1200euro its well under budget so you would have a bit of spare cash in case it needed anything and its nct'ed for over a year so not to bad

If there was movement in the budget.fast cash sale needed. returns over 660 miles to a tank

This would be a very good option to go for.
Have '08 93 for over a year now it's so comfy, it's fun and has never given me any problem. I drive roughly 25000 miles a year

If you could find a 03 or04 Passat 130brake 6 speed. They go forever. I got one this year and have 15000 miles gone into it with out any major problems. Hardest part is finding a unabused one. Depending on quality of diesel they will return around 600 miles to a tank.

Had 2 passats in my life time so I'm over them. But the newer version (05ish) are likable and the market is flooded with them.
    Why are they going cheapish?

Rover 75 or MGZT 2.0ltr cdi if you wanted a slightly younger image.
Cheap comfortable reliable and will do mid 40's mpg on normal runs and 50 on longer spins.
Will be picked up well within your budget

These are a nice looking motors. I think they are timing chain too and not a belt.

I have a diesel ZT over 5 years now probably should have got a rover 75 as the roads are not great where I live but that's my fault, parts are easily got from specialists all tried and tested and top quality.even better now with the exchange rate.make sure the diesel have had a new clutch and even better with the belts done as well my belts are on 150k and look fine but will have to get them fairly soon.

More people would move on plenty of Vetras to chose from for sale with reg clear.
how much does this actually happen with the hundreds of cars for sale with clear reg.

No they never had any other diesel engine other than the BMW one and to be fair the older version of BMW diesel engine the ZT/75 used was fairly reliable.

Rover/MG got the the older 116bhp and 136bhp versions. BMW had moved onto the 150bhp engine with turbo issues, that was never fitted to the Rover 75/MG ZT.

So my budget is gone up to about 3k. I think I have narrowed it down to a few cars.
    1. A6 04 2.0TDI.
    2. BMW 320d 04/05
    3. VW passats. 1.9tdi 05/06
    4. Saab 93 1.9. 06/07
What problems other than wear and tear do these pose.
I know the beemer has the swirly flap issues.
A any more input is appreciated.

    1. A6 04 2.0TDI. - Engine oil pump failures. Leads to wrecked engine. If upgraded oil pump drive is fitted then good car.
    2. BMW 320d 04/05 - Woeful heap of sh*te. Turbo's, swirl flaps, immobiliser issues
    3. VW passats. 1.9tdi 05/06 - Decent car, avoid BXE engines as can have conrod issues. Check electronic parking brake thoroughly, gave trouble on earlier models.
    4. Saab 93 1.9. 06/07 - Swirl flaps, injection 3 issues.

Passat would be the best from the above, followed by SAAB. Ford Mondeo 1.8tdci could be a good option: https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/ford-mondeo/12978736

Just make sure the timing belt has been done on the Mondeo as they're expensive to get done.

Swirl flaps are easy to fix. Turbo will go on any engine if not cooled down properly...

There is a filter on the turbo oil pickup that is difficult to change and tens to be neglected. This clogs and starves the turbo of oil. Happens on a lot of these 2.0d BMW's. Can be prevented by maintenance but the maintenance is time consuming and therefore costly
