Where to find history of an old cottage

I want to look up the history of a 140 year old cottage for someone I know they have just bought it and I thought it would be nice to get this information from them where would I get that information or is it even possible to get it as in is it available to the public ? Thanks

You could also check the census records and find out about the previous residents and their history.

You could make a "family tree" of the house. Leave some boxes to fill in so if there are any new arrivals they can be added.
