Replacing fence panels with concrete gravel boards

    Hi all,

I have a number of standard 1.8m fence panels that are in need of replacing. I'm considering using concrete gravel boards all the way up. The concrete h posts are nice and straight, a little over 1.8m apart so should be fine.

Has anyone done this before? It's meant to be a life time job. I'm wondering if I should mortar the ends in place or would it be best to leave expansion room? Good idea to put mortar between them?

Any ideas / tips would be welcome.

    Thanks

I replaced all of my timber panels 21 years ago like you are proposing to do. No mortar used - I just slotted them in. 20 years later I would do the same again. Careful though - while this looks simple enough, this is not a one man job. Enlist two friends as the concrete mortar boards are heavy especially when you have to lift them above the H posts to get them slotted; and then to slowly release them down into place.

Yea were kinda thinking it would be a three man job. Might make up some device to attach to the panel and help lift / avoid trapped fingers. I'll have a bit of sand / cement on stand by if any panels need to be centered... Thanks again

Yes. At least a two man job.

Or one man who owns a chain hoist :-)

I was wondering is there anything I can use (other than mortar) to fill up the expansion joints? I was thinking of the stuff they use on expansion joints of buildings / mass concrete?? Its like a grey paste that still allows some expansion?

Someone said use clear silicon, which is fine for between the boards but along the edges i'd prefer something thicker.
