Hello can anyone give me some advice. My little boy 2-1/2 is referred to see a doctor in tallaght hospital as I'm really worried about him and his behaviour I just feel there's something not right. He can't talk fully yet he won't potty train he is so angry and throws the worst fits ever I have two other children so I know how children behave and every child is different but I just feel in my heart sowmthing is wrong. Obviously he's on a public list but how long have people in this situation been waiting for an appointment and if you did go private how much did it cost online prices vary from 500-1000 which is money I do not have but if I know it will be a long wait I will do what I can to get it up. I really want him checked as I know early intervention is key any advice is welcome thanks for reading

My daughter was the same at 21/2 she didn't speak and wasn't toilet trained until she was 5, she threw tantrums and displayed a lot of worrying behaviour. She is 17 now a happy healthy girl who is about to go into 5th year. She was referred to her local health centre who conducted a battery of tests and referred her to Temple Street. The waiting time for her initial assessment was four or five weeks with the same between each appointment. A private psychological assessment is about €650 and no waiting time. My advice is to stay with the state system and look for all the help you can get from them. They were brilliant with my daughter. You also may be entitled to the domicilary care allowance.

He is on speech therapy waiting list nearly a year! I'm thinking the waiting list for this type of assessment could be the same as the HSE services are full up. Someone just PM me a price is a doctor of €400 if I don't get anywhere with HSE in the next two months I think I will just try pay this fee somehow for peace of mind. Thanks for your reply

Check out autism action on http://autismireland.ie/

Loads of good info here, they even offer assessment and diagnosis if you can't or don't want to wait.

Forget about asperger's, it's all Autism spectrum disorders now AFAIK.

My gut feeling judging from my own experience about 5 years ago is that you'll enter the system now but won't get an assessment for about a year. It's easier for them to do the assessment when the child is well past 2 years.

    Best wishes by the way

Yes I've been on that site but did not know they did assess thanks very much for letting me know. It could be even more than a years wait you just don't know that's the thing even if I knew a time frame. I'm worried sick and it has me up a lot st night thinking of the what ifs it could be me thinking the worst or it could be 'terrible twos' but until I get a professional answer I won't rest thanks for your reply

You won't get speech therapy they were overloaded when my daughter was 3 let alone now. We got her speech therapy it was €80 for 40 minutes back then. The lady we paid was great but in the long run I don't think it made any difference. It's very hard to diagnose at that age children usually get worse at around 9 or 10 or in my daughters case improve. Early intervention is the key my advice is to stick with the state services I know its frustrating and they are slow but once your son is in they'll look after him. It's not really possible to go private as the specialists all work for the state. A private psychological assessment will only tell you what they think at that time.

Stay in public system even if you go private. My fella was diagnosed at 3yrs and 10 months by Early Intervention team it took nearly two years. The psychologist maintained that it was best not to diagnose too early, but intervention is vital.

www.hanen.org HSE speech and language program in our area is based on this. There is a lot of information on this site and even if he doesn't have an ASD it is useful for late talkers.

He is still young enough regarding potty training some people do t start potty training until 3 or 3.5
