Macbook Pro Trackpad Issue

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro (non retina) running OS X El Capitan and until yesterday it was working perfectly. I have suddenly developed an issue with my trackpad. When I try using the trackpad the curser can jump all over the screen and thinks I'm trying to click on things at times. This can result in opening links, programs etc or zooming in unexpectedly. Can work fine for over an hour and then start acting strange again. I have connected a USB mouse and disable some of the gestures (e.g. tap to click) just as a stop gap measure. Any suggestions?
