    Would baby shampoo be suitable?

A hairdresser friend of mine recommends this with extensions but I don't know if it would do much for build up.

I don't have extensions myself, but an old fashioned remedy is to add a splash of vinegar to your final rinse - you'd have to check how extension friendly this is but it does work!

Baby shampoo? That's a bit bizarre!

Ordinary Baby shampoo is by far the worst thing to use for any hair type as its formulated for the Ph level of your tears so it's far too alkaline for hair. A bit like the old style perm solutions.

Vinegar, (or lemon juice) on the other hand is acid so that's why it's recommended as a rinse for hair.

What you need is a chelating shampoo. Joico make a good one but only use it occasionally.
