So, yesterday I download a few games from Steam.

It rounded off to about 50gb in size.

I think that's the largest amount of data I've ever downloaded in my life. Thing is I got to wondering if that was actually considered a large amount to download.

I'm from the days where my first HDD was 3.5gb and I genuinely thought I never fill that...ever. :pac: LOL.

Nowadays that's an update for a single game.

So, is 50gb considered a large amount of data? Or am I too old and have no idea? :D

You ain't old lad ... My first work PC had a princely 20MB HDD (and that was frickin HUGE for the time) ... an IBM PS/2 as I recall, running OS/2 .

A 50GB download would cause your connection to be limited until midnight if you were an Imagine customer (unless you downloaded it between midnight and 7:00am).

Other Mobile midband connections would have you being charged for data until the end of the month.

If you are on a proper broadband connection (ADSL/VDSL/FTTH) from a proper ISP, then that 50GB would be nothing to them.

So it kinda depends on what you're connecting with.

    20MB HDD? Ooooh fancypants!

It's gas to think at how large storage has become over the years, isn't it?

As for my connection, I'm on "proper" broadband from a "proper" ISP, with "unlimited" downloads (although I know there's no such thing in reality).

However, I was just wondering if people considered 50gb a large amount of data to D/L.

Having the same discussion last night with some mates, several scoffed and claimed it was nothing and one thought it was a mad figure to get down in one day.

IMO 50GB is a large amount of data to download in one day - if you exclude games.

In rural areas, 50GB is the around the monthly limit of many fixed wireless providers. 50GB is also the largest monthly mobile broadband package that both Meteor and Vodafone offer. Imagine reportedly allows unlimited usage between midnight and 7am, but am not sure about other providers.

While many fixed line providers now offer 1TB/month packages, there are some that still have much smaller packages to avoid if they'll be used for gaming. For example, Sky's entry Fibre broadband offering has a 25GB monthly limit and Digiweb's Lite offering has a 40GB limit. Even Digiweb's regular package has a 350GB limit that a few game downloads/updates would easily eat up, especially if combined with a streaming service such as Netflix.

I have around 300GB of files I want to upload to the internet, HD Vids to youtube mainly. I have a 1mb per second upload speed and it would supposedly take me around 35 days to upload them running 24/7 from here. Anybody know anywhere with a really fast upload speed where I could go and connect up and upload them in a much faster length of time? Anywhere in Ireland would be ok as I travel around the country regularly.

If you regularly stay overnight in areas with good Three 4G coverage, I would suggest getting a 4G phone with a large storage capacity or which can take a 64GB MicroSD card and a Three prepay SIM. Top up the phone by €20 to get AYCE data, load a set of videos (e.g. 10GB to 20GB at a time) and let them upload to YouTube overnight, such as after midnight when few are using the network.

While Three's downlink speed can get rather slow during peak time, the uplink over 4G generally remains quick all the time:

If you already have Three, I suggest using a separate prepay SIM as they may throttle it after the 60GB fair usage allowance is used. The throttle reportedly applies during peak time usage, so it'll unlikely affect overnight off-peak time uploading.

What size is the original install?

A 12gb patch sounds ridiculous. Are they redoing 3/4's of the whole thing? WTH?
