Working two jobs concurrently

Suppose one had a job working online and could pick one's own hours, work from wherever, etc. If one then wanted a second, quiet, job, during which one could then do the second job if one were not busy... what manner of job should this second job be?

I realise this is probably not the right forum, but I figured I'd ask here anyway, since yizzer all a bunch of a geniuses.

No defrauding necessary, I'd be honest with them about it.

If you tell your current employer you're sufficient quiet to do other work I imagine one of two things.

    1. Extra work will be found for you.
    2. You'll be put on part time hours.

So you want a job where you can bring your laptop and work on your own project while being paid to do nothing?

    Good luck with that.

Could sign up for house cleaning on Hassle.ie, you'd be working whatever hours suited you so could do less hours when your online job got busy etc.

Hard to know really when we don't know your background ... is there anything related to your career that you could do, e.g. if you work in Business/Finance you could do grinds in accountancy/business for secondary school students, etc.

Ideally (for tax-dodging reasons!) you'd want to be going for a job where you'd be self-employed on a casual basis, that's why I'd suggest the cleaning or grinds ... babysitting could be another one.

For the current job, I am on part-time hours. I clock in and out when I'm working on the project. Currently I'm sitting in a cafe, using their wifi, buying stuff occasionally so that I don't feel like I'm imposing. If there were, for example, some sort of receptionist job in some unpopular place, or somewhere that needed someone to be present all day, with very rare moments of activity - like a gate-keeper of some description... then I'd be happy to do that for less than the going rate, and it wouldn't interfere with my current work - in fact, it would probably enhance it, as there would be fewer distractions.
Even if it's some sort of volunteering thing, that would be cool too.

Security gard or gateman would suit, do the graveyard shift there'll be nothing happening.

There's lots of internet-based volunteering you could do. For example correcting OCR scans of books for digital libraries. It might be ideal, since you can devote as much or as little time as you like.

Project Gutenberg is one possibility. But I like the Béaloideas project in UCD - they collected stories from kids in primary schools all over Ireland in the 1930s and are making it available online. I did some correcting for them last year, I assume it's still ongoing.

Could ya not do what most people do in quiet moments ?

Go for a dump , snooze or make threatening phone calls to the office snitches.

I'm afraid you've misunderstood me - I have an internet-based job, doing another one at the same time would definitely interfere with my ability to do the first. I'm looking for some sort of position that requires constant presence, but only occasional activity. Security or gateman might be the way to go...

    Ah I get you now.

TBH if I hired you for a security job I wouldn't be impressed if you were doing something else on the side, as it would surely impact the amount of attention you're paying to my premises. Gateman/night porter might be a better way to go.

(Yes, I'm aware I may be naive about the amount of attention security guards pay to their jobs :))

Become a govt minister. Multiple ministries seems to be a doddle for some.

There's always going to be an intellectual property issue.

If by some chance, you make €100 million on your side project, your former employer can come chasing you for a share in that money on the basis that you did the groundwork on their company time, and therefore it is wholly or partially their property.

Even if you're sitting in your place of work (e.g. the canteen) and working off-the-clock on your side project, things can get iffy.

I pretty much just correct typos for a non-profit organization, I can't see pursuing me for anything being terribly worthwhile..

Security Guard in a Carpark. I spent 4 years in college working full time hours at night doing that. I did all my study and projects while sitting in my hut throwing my eye on the cameras and going for a walk around every half hour and occasionally dealing with the public.

Night time security guard for an industrial park, or night porter in a biggish B&B. I know a few people who did those jobs while they were in university and used the time to study. I also know a few people who had those kind of jobs who wrote books while they were working.

I know one person who was on duty during the night in the B&B and had a room for herself who could sleep and any problems would be routed to an alarm in her room which would wake her. She'd watch a film, read a book, or browse websites then go to sleep. It'd be rare she'd be woken, and it was usually only to let people in who'd lost their key.

As for people saying employers would have an issue with this, these people''s employers never had an issue with them. I know a couple of people who were hired for security specifically because they'd be studying. Their managers knew they would disappear for half the night to visit their girlfriend, or wouldn't go for a kip because they actually wanted to be awake and studying.

Become night watchman in a mortuary. It's very quiet although you may find yourself accused of being a serial killer if you're not careful:

What's with all the 'ohh you'd have to tell your employer ' guys :pac:
Don't have to tell them anything. Just do it on the side and and keep it to yourself.
