signing book for golf competition

Do any of you golf club members sign in competition book for entry - even though you have entered via computer, been given a sticker by the starter to put on your card? We still have to do this in our club & would be interested to know if other clubs do this also. The practice seems obsolete. The reason I'm asking is a fellow club member was disqualified because she forgot to sign the competition book. She was also refused a refund of her competition fee, which she requested on principle, as she wasn't in competition.

    Yes, all of the above.

Yes we do, main reason is to keep track of the cash. Signing in on the computer doesn't mean you have paid, to the sheet notes the €5 paid and whether it was card or cash

What a bunch of cowboys. This kind of stuff drives me nuts.

The majority of clubs use a sign in sheet and correctly so, in your case the club was harsh in saying signing into the computer was not sufficient to constitute entry, but if as they said it's a condition of competition entry to sign the sign in sheet, then that's their call and she should in principle get her entry fee back as according to them she never entered the comp.

Nope, at our place it's all on the computer and no cash changes hands.

Everyone has an account on the BRS system and when you swipe in to enter, then the money is deducted from your account. Plus you have to have sufficient credit in your account to book a slot in the comp in the first place, but if you withdraw before the start of the comp there's no fee.

I'd prefer it if the deadline for an unconditional withdrawal was 24 hours before the start with only a 50% refund for withdrawals after that to deter people from baling when they wake up and see the weather :)

We have to sign in on the computer and get a sticker for the card. We also get signed in by the pro shop. We have a competition purse on brs and we have until the evening before the comp to drop out of the comp to save the comp fee.

We pay up and thats it. Then we sign in or not (computer is elsewhere). After the round we enter the score into the computer (with or without having signed in). Technically not 100% as someone who paid & played could simply opt not to enter the score but I doubt its done a lot.
Not sure they are 100% diligent on checking all entered scores vs the pay sheet but I assume they do. Certainly for anyone thats in the prizes.

Its a bit haphazard and leaves room for people who don't want to enter a score into the computer. Like a bad one and they don't want the .1 or a decent one they know has no chance of winning (say 38 or 39 points) to avoid the 'pointless' cut. I'm sure both things do happen and I think the club should probably revise this policy.

We pay in the shop and they sign us in and give us a card with sticker on it

I have played a good few other places though where they still have sign in books. Castleknock is one

Pretty much the same situation in my club unfortunately. The gap between the signing in book in the pro shop and signing in on the computer in the hallway is the problem. Its not checked officially but I know from spot checks that there's regularly 20 more names in the book than are entered on the computer on your average Saturday.

Nope, at our place it's all done via the computer and no cash is involved. No requirement from anyone to be in pro shop either to handle money.

You top up your BRS account and when you swipe entry, competition entry is automatically deducted from account. You need credit to be able to book a line in the comp also so works out well. Only disadvantage is there is no 2s to enter anymore.

Our place brought in the competition purse maybe a couple of years ago now
I don't think anyone ever used it

Personally, I didn't like it. You fork out enough for your sub, bar levy etc.
I know you can top up the purse as you go, but really if you are going to do it, you are going to be sticking a 50 or 100 on to it.
much rather just pay the 7 quid as I play

The Blessed lakes, members sign in the book which is the way we track and balance our cash at the end of each comp. We do not use the sticker system, only have starters on Sundays.

Our place has a book alright but the pro or whoever is in the proshop writes in the names as people pay. Works well.
