Anyone know how does the VW Tdi engine rate, compared to their 1.6? Not performance but reliability.

Similar DPF, EGR, turbo issues expected with age?

Looking at B7 Passats with around 80k miles.

Commonrail engine, no horror stories to be honest.

DPF has a tendency to block itself, but that's how it is with 99% of the new diesels anyway.

The DPF gives very few problems on the CR 2.0 compared to the older PD engine. The main issue to watch for on the B7 version is the EGR valve. It's a pretty expensive part to replace so finding a car that has already had it done would be a bonus. Water pumps also have a habit of leaking prematurely leading to timing belt and water pump replacement ahead of schedule. Apart from that they are a good engine. Very refined with smooth power delivery and best in class fuel economy.

The 1.6 is essentially the same engine and shares a lot of the same parts so the same applies regarding the EGR and water pump. One extra thing to watch for on the 1.6 is the odd injector issue. The 1.6 uses Siemens injectors which are not as reliable as the Bosch setup on the 2.0.
