Qashqai vs Tuscon vs Sportage

    Hi all,

Some general advice needed. My parents are changing car over the coming fortnight or so and will be going for a new car. They have narrowed their choices to a Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tuscon or Kia Sportage.

Mileage will be low (very low - they currently have a 2005 1.8l Nissan Tino with 45,000km on it!) and will consist of mostly short trips of 5-10km, with one motorway trip every 3 weeks of 300km or so.

    So, whats needed:
    • Decent comfortable seats - my mother has a bad back so looking for something easy to get in and out of
    • Some poke - not expecting anything powerful obviously, but don't want anything that would feel sluggish
    • Reliability
    • Cheaper tax and running costs are a factor as although they do very low mileage, they are both at retirement age so the cheaper to run, the better
    • They do want as many toys as possible inside including Sat Nav and Parking Camera as a minimum, therefore looking at the Premium, Executive and EX models respectively. (I think)
    • Budget is 30k maximum including scrappage.
    • They will only buy a new car - they have no interested in buying 2nd hand depsite my best efforts.

They are open to Petrol or Diesel models - I have recommended the petrol given the mileage they do, and the type of journey.

Are there any recommendations on these models and which particular version would be best? Anything to watch out for with them? And any other recommendations you can make that would fall into the above guidelines?

Thanks all, any advice appreciated as always!

Having been a passenger in a Qashqai last weekend all I can say is, it's far from comfortable and for a car of it's size it's cramped.

AS you want toys which aren't available in Tucson petrol you are limited to Diesel for that option. New owner of the petrol model I am very happy however next weekend will get test of a trip west.

Check out the Renault Kadjar, journo's would have you believe it is superior to those three and good value too. Skoda's KodiaQ is on the way too, and promises to be very good.

The Qashqai is really the only petrol option being available with the 1.2 litre turbo engine in decent spec. The Tucson in 1.6 litre petrol is only available in the base spec and I'd doubt many dealers will be interested in getting you one. The Sportage is not sold here in petrol form and I'd say with such low mileage and usage they wouldn't benefit in any way from buying diesel. Other alternatives in this size petrol would be the Suzuki Vitara, would not be as main stream as the others though.

Another one to look at but it's a bit smaller than the likes of the Qashqai, Tucson or Sportage is the new Honda HR-V which is available in 1.5 litre petrol. It's a bit smaller and more a rival to the Nissan Juke or Renault Captur.

    Skoda Yeti is another option.
My mother bought one very recently, 1.2 TSI DSG and is very happy with the seats, ease of access.

Its the Outdoor model with front rear parking sensors & Smartlink option to enable Apple CarPlay, Android Auto functionality.

I think there is a new Yeti being launched early next year so there might be good deals to be got on current stock.

The Seat Ateca is also due out soon (I think September). Its built on the Volkswagen Tiguan platform, and has lots of gadgets (inc. wireless phone charging)

I think the Ateca has a 1.4 petrol available at all trim levels too.

Had the old model Qashqai for 4 years and my parents have new model. Not sure why the comment about cramped and not comfortable.

Both are SV. No problems with comfort or cramped. If for your parents then only 2 people majority of time traveling so would be perfect. My parents had car and I took them on a few trips and loved Qashqai so bought one.

Not sure what petrol is like as I was in the diesel but talked to a few people and said petrol was decent.

If you have budget of 30k, you would gte 4k trade in for current car so you could go with manual SV Premium and keep the 4k in back pocket or test the auto and get that. I moved to auto and never will go back

I would still have Qashqai only needed a 7 seater......
