Really enjoying hearing Eoin and the boys back on the wireless. Podcasts are fine but theres something unique about live radio. The first guest was Gabby Logan who was a terrific interviewee giving her insights into being a sports competitor and subsequently a female sports broadcaster in a male dominated by world. Only slightly negative observation is this , does it really take 3 people to interview one person ( Eoin , Ken and Murph ) even if the interview lasts the guts of an entire hour.

This is basically the format of show I was hoping for, an extended interview dealing with something other than direct sport, with a little chat at both sides by the lads.

Agree with you heybaby that it's great to have them on radio as opposed to podcasts.

The "This Sporting Life" thing is a bit gimmicky, but it's good for a laugh I think.

Next week is David O'Doherty, looking forward to that, even though I know he's not a lot of people's cup of tea around here... :P

Listened to the radio 1 show this morning. It was an interview with Gabby Logan. Maybe I'm just hungover but I'm not sure what the listener was meant to take out of it.

Thought it was very good. Gabby was excellent. The final points scoring segment was unnecessary for gabby who is very accomplished. Might work better for David odoherty next week

It's a similar format to "Miriam Meets". It's just meant to be a light interview about the guest's life. In this case, her youth as the daughter of a professional footballer, her own sporting career and her broadcasting career.

I disagree. I thoroughly enjoyed the Gabby interview. Thought it was fun and light, which is what I want on a Sunday morning. I wouldn't want them to be going too deep into heavy issues at that time of the morning tbh.

But then, I tend to enjoy Miriam's interviews at times too, so I can understand why people who are more into the serious stuff wouldn't enjoy it.

Yeah, Eoin, Ken and Murph were on, Mark and Simon were credited as producers at the end.

It'll be interesting to see how they balance the interviews. IIRC Ken really only asked one question to Gabby and Murph seemed to be more involved. Just wondering whether they'll mix that up depending on the guest....

Oh wow, that should be brilliant. His bit in the sports annual was fantastic.

Yeah. Instead of a Second Captains show they're basically like guest presenters on another show. Makes sense but not good listening.

I totally get that they had to follow the concept of the existing show's format but I'd love a paper review & a discussion of the week's events between the lads.

A 45 minute interview about why Gabby chose to compete in gymnastics, how she came to be in the rose of tralee or what her parents thought about her playing sports...I don't really care. I don't know who would find this interesting. I don't really want the lads doing Ryan Tubridy style interviews. It's not their talent.

People don't like David O'Doherty?!! Next week should be fantastic!

Anyway I thought it was good, nice to have the music too. Gabby is well able to talk isn't she?

Also Ken's silky tone describing how he rummaged through his bin this morning bringing him to a wider audience :pac:

    I'd have to disagree.

Gabby was a very good guest and it was an interesting interview. A nice mix of sport and personality questions.

There are plenty of paper reviews on other Sunday shows, it would be pointless on what is essentially a continuation of Miriam's programme.

I quite liked the show, thought Logan was pretty interesting and a Sunday morning RTE 1 show isn't really the place for serious, tough questions.

The worst thing about this was trying to listen back to it on RTE's radio app. Christ almighty.

Could be worse... I listened to Sunday Miscellany while waiting for them... :pac:

I've heard worse, perfectly acceptable for a summer's morning. You know what you're going to get with the three lads at this stage.

The quality of the audio when Gabby Logan spoke was shockingly bad though.

Maybe Off The Ball could offer Murph a two month contract as "colour presenter" until they find someone to replace Woolly.

McDevitt is an excellent presenter and broadcaster. I can't understand how he aligns himself with the other two lads who are holding him back.

I think Ken is brilliant, an odd take on everything.

Murph is a bit of a waste of space cutting over somthing funny/interesting with an inane lame comment. Provides zero insight into any sports.

I dont know what it is. I used to enjoy the guys on Off The Ball when they were on the show. But since then I have lost a lot of respect for them and interest in their shows. All I think of when I hear Ken now is seeing that awkward looking guy on the TV, who sits in the corner hoping that nobody will ask him a question. When I hear McDevitt, I just picture his constant looking out at the audience for gratification. And Murphy trying to get through a single sentence of yet another "hilarious" monologue without stumbling over his words.

I'm actually surprised how little time I have for them now, cos I used to be a big fan of all three.

Really enjoyed the D O'D interview this morning.

Hadn't heard the Denis Hickey story before so I loved how they went after that. Thought it was a really nice touch to have Hickey on, and a weird curve ball at the end with the first female Olympian for Ireland.

The wrap up at the end with the scores, a thing which I felt might have potential as a closer, really isn't doing it for me yet. Sort of feels a bit forced.

I also think it's probably a good thing that it's a limited run. I think interviewing non-sports people would get very old after a few months. At present it's a nice thing to listen to of a Sunday morning as it's light and cheery.

All in all though, it's about the only listenable show on Radio 1 for me now. :P

Agreed. But I do think McDevitt is very good on the radio. Early is actually quite a good writer but I don't think he suits TV or radio. The other lad Murphy can actually write quite well too.

Anyone listen today? I think Abramson wasn't a good guest for a sports themed show. He doesn't appear to have any interest in sport bar the boxing film he has in the pipeline. Wasn't their best work but for a Sunday morning it's an ok show to have on

Yeah, agree with you here. Of the 3 shows so far, today was definitely the weakest IMO, though maybe it'd appeal more to Miriam's regular listeners?

I'd have much preferred a longer chat with Barry McGuigan or that soccer player they had on for 2 minutes at the end if I'm being honest. The main part of the interview was a bit dull, but the second part where Lenny was talking about playing pool in San Francisco was good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,305 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Prodston

They should really ensure they've got 5 minutes at the end for Ken's life tips and weekend events. It's those chats between themselves that stand them apart and shouldn't come at a cost of 5 extra minutes of interview.

Still better than anything else mind :pac:

Was better today. Des can be a bit self absorbed at times but I think they reigned him in sufficiently. The whole show really on depends on the quality of the interviewee

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,869 ✭✭✭PeterTheNinth

Listened to it for a few minutes today. It's far too "wacky" for my liking. When they were on Off The Ball, it was a sports show with sporadic and spontaneous bits of comedy. Now it seems they are trying to have a comedy show, with sporadic bits of sport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

Didn't get a chance to hear the entire thing this morning, but I happened to tune in while Des was talking about the US election. They'd want to be careful with stuff like that on RTE, particularly his "Racists love Trump." line. While I 100% agree with him, the lads could easily find themselves in hot water with the BAI if someone takes exception to it.

    Edit:

This isn't a sports show though. It's more or less cover for Miriam's show, so you can't really expect them to get into sports analysis or in depth interviews with the sports administrator of the week or what have you.

I mean, it's fair enough if you don't like this style of show, but IMO at the moment we're getting the best of both worlds right now with the podcasts and this show showcasing two sides of the guys talents.

    They are unashamedly liberal.

The marriage referendum was glorified by Ken Early on their podcast.

Their podcast is a production of the Irish Times who are closely associated with the Guardian newspaper who would be seen as liberal.

There is a huge bias towards Hilary Clinton in the Irish media. Trump is seen as a complete joke as the default position.

That's my point though. On podcasts they're free to give their opinion all they want, but on broadcast radio, especially on the public broadcaster, there are far more rules and regulations governing how stuff can be covered.

Trump may be a complete and utter racist cretin IMO, but BAI regulations stipulate that he needs to be treated with as much objectivity as Clinton.

Now, in all likelihood nothing will come of this, but if I were their producer I'd be having a word with them during the week about it. It would be incredibly unfortunate to pick up a BAI strike if they're (for now) only scheduled to do 8 or so shows anyway...

Do BAI regulations in relation to elections/political candidates require balance for foreign elections? I wouldn't have thought so.

And Trump is a complete joke, not just seen as one. It doesn't matter where your politics are, he's a joke and a very fukken dangerous one.
