Discussion on the internet....

Why do so many discussions on the internet transcend into bickering, moaning and insults? :pac:

Take boards.ie for example and while not every thread you can see it happen a lot in After Hours.
Example: Someone posts a thread, often followed by a few joke posts, people talk about the subject, others argue with that... Then the madness happens. People just arguing with each other back and fourth :pac: usually some sly insults are thrown in to boot. Just looks like both parties want to be right.

Why just why? Like when you think about it, it can be a bunch of people just sitting down while on the internet, constantly arguing to someone who you will most likely never meet in the real world while talking about a subject that does not effect your life one bit. This is madness I tell's ya! :pac:

    Anyone think the same?

    Anonymity is a factor

The absence of tonality and body language causes offence to be taken where none is intended ya eejit"........see!

Competitiveness to have the last word

An intolerance to see the possibility that there is more than one way to view a situation

An inability to see that very very few situations are black vs white, nearly every situation and option has advantages and disadvantages

    Take your pick

    I think people + boredom + internet.
    It passes the time.

I imagine when it isn't one of the above it is probably people getting angry at someones opinion of their life experience, being told they're wrong or that they aren't looking for anecdotal evidence.
Any sources for that, that is just your opinion, you're wrong etc etc etc.

I generally like to pop into threads and see what ****e jokes are made, when the conversation actually gets going I leave. Usually.

But that is like just my opinion maaaaaan.

People being entrenched in one "side" and refusing to even vaguely consider the perspective of the other, or the grey area in between.

I guess if you want fiery dramatic entertaining debate it needs to be between people of opposing extremes, but constructive debate can only be between moderates in the centre.

It makes me lurk here more than post.... for fear of the head being bitten off me. Everyone has the 'self-importance' thing going on. I read so many posts here that interest me, discussions I would love to be able to have with my friends and family (but they're not interested in the same stuff) but I refrain from posting most of the time because like you say, the bickering starts and I just can't be bothered with the jibes

Try not to let it scare you off. Place is full of pricks alright but most people are grand.
Worst comes to the worst there is always the ignore button.

Indeed there is. If you click on someones username you get options:
    View profile
    Send PM
    Find more posts by
    Add to contacts
    Add to ignore.

I haven't used it yet myself but I'm sure I will someday.

Click on the poster's name and choose 'add to ignore list'

Only problem is when people engage with someone on your ignore list so you end up seeing all these posts and have to try to skip over those too which generally makes a thread unreadable

    I feel exactly the same.

I didn't know there was an ignore button, but I wouldn't use it to be honest. I prefer to hear what people think...the good, the bad and the ugly. As for trolls, they end up looking foolish usually.

I'm only looking at life from my perspective. I mightn't agree with what others post on boards but sometime it gives another insight on a situation.

Not everyone has thick skins I think it is a good idea.

I agree with the rest though.

I couldn't make the Ignore button work for me.

other people would quote them, so I saw what was said anyway
My own pride/hubris/competitiveness meant I wanted to see what the dickheads were saying
I was a mod, so was required to deal with complaints about the dickheads

So I don't bother with the ignore function, and choose whom I respond to, when and under what circumstances, I find that more satisfying

I have been a mod too....not on boards. It's a thankless job and I wouldn't sign up for it again.

I tried to use an Aldi colander as a shade during the last eclipse.

Ended up straining my eyes :(

    I meant strawman.
Transported to a surreal landscape a young woman kills the first person she meets, and then teams up with total strangers to kill again.
