Waiting for a bus into town in templeogue village today around 8am and a completely full 15 blazes past us. The RTPI reports a 49 due in ten minutes but a few minutes later a 15c bus arrives. It wasnt displaying on the RTPI or my app. Was fairly empty and took the normal 15 route into town. I recall this route existing years ago but there's zero mention of it on the list of routes online. I saw it later in town around 6pm so it doesn't seem to be a one off

A 15C is a short version of a regular 15, working to City Centre only.

You can see similar suffixes on most of the cross-city routes. For example, 1C, 4C, 11C etc.

They are used either to operate as extras to take pressure off a regular bus on the full route, or if the driver is due to break or finish in the city centre at a certain time, s/he may be instructed to operate the bus to city centre only.

The 15c in the mornings is an extra bus added to cope with demand on the 15 - it's not timetabled so won't appear on RTPI.
