When did the price of smokes go up?

So I'm sent down the shops for me next door neighbour fairly regularly, poor old dear doesn't venture out much these days.

Anyways, no problem with it, in fact I consider it one of my many good deeds in life, and as a firm believer in goes around/comes around, reckon it'll stand over me in the near future.

But, she sends me off to the local news agent with €15. Asked to bring back "20 smokes, and 2 x big bottles of coke".

So I saunter in to the shop, grabs me twin pack of 2 * 175ml coke (€3.50 in my mind) and walks over to shop assistant for the tabs. (€10.50 in my mind)

    "€15.20" was the reply.

At first, but embarrassed, cos I headed down to the shop travelling light (ie no wallet).

The assistant said, "yeah that coke is normally on special, but its not now, so €4.40, and cigs are now 10.80 a pack"

I always assumed smokes went up in a budget, and I'm not aware of one in the last week or two?

So its near €11 to smoke a box of cigs these days? I reckon Elsie would be cheaper buying a bag of weed tbh.

    Nearly €11 for 20?

It was £1.05 for 10 in 1990 when I first took them up and I seem to remember it was about €6 for 20 in 2006 when I gave them up!!

price went up about a month ago, its a manufacturers price increase not a tax increase which happens after a budget

It's about two months ago now. Price goes up twice a year. Once when the government increase tax and once when the distributors up the price.

If I remember correctly the actual manufacturer gets between one twentieth and one tenth the price.

You can't do the good deed too often if you've only noticed the increase now. I got caught out about two months ago when I only took the price of my cigarettes and paper with me and ended up 30 cent short. At least my credit was good in the shop.

It's been a while since I bought tobacco in a shop here. I normally give money to people going on holidays. It works out less than half price. I recently bought a 25g pack for €11.90. Up 20c since april.

How much for 20 of the straight lads?

    How is this a problem?

I hope they keep increasing the prices

The cost of ciagarette smoking to the health system is enormous.

An outright tobacco ban would be ideal.

And good luck running the health service if there wasn't over €1.1billion a year coming from tobacco taxes. We'd still die from something and still require treatment for something. Of course we may live longer - more pension payments, more nursing home care..........

On Moore Street a pack of twenty is a fiver or so. Blatant selling of contraband and no shrinking violets there either.

But still, it's nearly half the price of the shop.

No police, no customs. Way to go. It's bandit country now.

Glad I don't smoke, but I am no angel either in other ways, each to their own.

Smoking is one of the cardinal risk factors for atherosclerosis.

We spend a lot more than €1.1 billion on ischaemic Heart Disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, cancer, infections, aneurysms. The government has to pay for the medical and surgical management of these conditions. Then there's the costs for nursing, physiotherapy, social work, occupational therapy etc.

Someone gets a stroke or amputation and they spend months in rehabilitation. They often never work again. Only 10% of patients ever fully recover from a stroke. Severe COPD leaves people housebound and on long term oxygen therapy.

You wouldn't be making jokes if you visited an oncology or respiratory ward.

I don't actually smoke , it's After Hours , most of the threads are light hearted and good humoured.

I don't expect to be making jokes in either of the two wards though I been in and out of oncology with a parent for about six years now. It's terminal now , so AH is a good stress relief from the stress of work and personal life.

    Lighten up.

    Lighten up.

Smokers should stop lighting up and taking up hospital beds for people with less preventable diseases.
