Google maps navigation - gone silent on me!

I reasonably frequently use Google maps navigation on my phone, but lately most of the time it's gone silent on me - the map works perfectly and I can follow that, but there is no voice to accompany it.

I've checked every setting, and it's not muted, the volume isn't down and I can't think of anything else that it could be!

First time it happened I restarted the phone and the voice came back - but since then the voice only comes on about 1 in 10 times I use it. It appears to be entirely random, I can't figure out what makes it work/not work.

    Anyone else experience this???

    It's a Galaxy S6 if that helps.

There should be a little sound icon in the top right corner when you enter navigation mode. Have you tried changing it there?

Also, is it connecting to some Bluetooth device in your car by any chance?

Yep, checked that and not on mute.

No.... When it works the voice is from the phone..... Phone does connect for calls but never has for navigation.

Go to Bluetooth and select the name of your car Bluetooth. Then untick media audio if it is ticked. If you only use Bluetooth for calls then only phone audio should be selected. Did you re-pair them recently?

    Bingo!

I've only recently had to use the phone sat nav in the car, and just about remembered this post - and it did the trick.

    Thanks a million!

(I'm assuming that there's no way of feeding the phone sat nav through the car speakers via bluetooth, since it was enabled and wasn't feeding through before?? Now THAT would be handy!!)

Hmm.... strange. Calls are no problem. I wonder why the satnav won't feed?

Anyway, at least I've got it talking again out of SOME speaker, which is the main thing!

You need media audio ticked for it to work.

But that was the problem in the first place.... it had been ticked and the phone speaker was disabled - but the audio never came out through the car speakers.

Now it's unticked, at least I'm getting the instructions through the phone.

    I'm confused, Ted!

I don't think having media ticked should stop Google maps from working, I've both ticked and I can play music, voice navigation and phone calls through the speakers.

Probably depends on what Bluetooth device you use, mine is a parrot wired into the radio.

Make sure media volume is turned up.

I have a similar problem with my new car that supports BT audio as well as the phone, not with Google Maps, but with Agent, an app that amongst other things reads out messages, texts etc., over BT.

If I have BT audio ticked in the pairing settings for the phone, it looks like it attempts to use that to read text messages which doesn't work as it seems that BT profile doesn't interrupt or override whatever else is playing at the time, be it radio, CD, USB or BT audio. Unchecking BT audio for the car BT pairing does the job, but means I can no longer stream music from my phone.

I don't know if Agent is doing this on purpose, i.e. choosing the audio profile (A2DP?) over the phone profile (HFP?) deliberately for some reason, or just choosing the first, or highest quality one. Attempts to contact the developers have failed on this.
