Hi, probably a very silly question but I'm trying to settle an argument. I'm looking at buying a 2011-2013 Jetta and the hubby is dismissing all 1.6 because apparently there was something about them being crap and he can't remember what....
Is there any truth to this?

The 1.6tdi Diesel engine is fine reliability ok power wise not going to win any races but it's adequate. The egr gave trouble on some of them that's probably the biggest issue.

I had a 2011 VW Jetta 1.6 TDI and while it was no sports-car, it was fine at what it was supposed to do.

It was a pretty quiet car when up and running, returned around 60mpg. (Light foot here) and had a great big boot.

Comfortable and 100% reliable for the few years I owned it.

The Jetta is the plain Jane of the VW family but it was a pretty agreeable if slightly boring car to live with.

I have a 1.6 litre 2013 Jetta from new and could never fault it. It's a very comfortable car and extremely easy on diesel. It's also got a good size boot.

Iam considering another new one but I'll stick my own in Donedeal first to see how it goes. They also hold good value which is another plus.

My brother has a 1.9 and I love it. It's a really lovely car to drive, has a massive boot and is that little bit smaller than a Passat so easier for parking so I always said a Jetta would be my next car!

He makes a very reasoned and well thought out argument :pac:

What does he suggest that you buy instead?

Aren't a lot of the newer ones 2.0 now but detuned?

1.6 TDi was dropped from the Jetta late last year when it got a facelift. Only the 2.0 TDi is available now with 110bhp but a bit more torque than the old 1.6 TDi.

Always found the Jetta to be a bit of an enigma in that VW tried to position it higher up than the likes of a Corolla or Focus saloon which meant it clashed with the bigger Passat which most people opted for instead. Always being based on the previous generation Golf and a bale of hay in the boot image didn't help sales either.

Put a couple of Jetta's out this year to one customer. Both Highline 150ps models, one manual, one DSG. With the 161 upgrade it turned in to a nice car, and with the extra discount VW give over the Golf/Passat it's quite good value for money. Drivers could have had a Passat 1.6Tdi Trendline or the 2.0Tdi 150 Jetta Highline with a cost difference of only a couple of Euro a month to them!

Sounds decent alright but most privately buyers tend to go for Passats over the Jetta unless they specifically need a more compact size.

Not specific to VW though, nobody buys focus saloons anymore for the same reason.

Even Corolla sales seem to be down

Too big of difference price-wise in the Jetta and the Passat. For me to change my 13 Jetta comfortline 1.6 with VW dealer costs about €9k but for a Passat comfortline it's costing €16k. Put the two cars side by side and I can't see €7k in difference. My Jetta does 950 Kms for a tank which is hard to beat.
