I use the 24-105 f4L but need something slightly wider (using it with a cropped sensor). Which of the 16-35 or 17-40 is the better lens?

From what I have read the 16-35 F4 IS is better than, the 16-35 F2.8 mk2 which is better than the 17-40 F4. But the reality is that they are all good lenes at very different price points. There are also rumours of a soon to be announced 16-35 F2.8 Mk3 which may have an impact on the pricing of the others.

The 16-35 F4 would be the one I'd get if I didn't already have the 16-35 F2.8 II.
The mark III will be fairly pricey when it comes out.

This guys reviews are usually pretty good and he compares to similar lenses as well. I find that Digital Rev guy a bit of a joke.

    I had a 16-35 mk 1 and it was awful. I just got a 16-35 f4 and its fantastic.
