Anyone recommend an audio upgrade that would make a big difference and how much might I have to spend?

Not looking for head unit just speakers etc...?

    Thanks.

What BMW is it, E46, E90 etc ?

Speakers will definitely make a difference compared to the dross they install in the factory.

It's an E90, sound seems fairly poor in them alright. Drive an awful lot so looking for something decent yet fairly discreet. Have two young kids so can't be filling the boot with stuff but would like a drastic improvement on what's currently there.

If you had any recommendations that would be great.

The main thing is to improve the front speakers. Plenty of stuff out there available for you car.

Biggest problem with all the BMW's for years now has been the fact they went with a tiny mid range in the doors and stuck a couple of mediocre "woofers " under the seats to add some ( sort of ) lower frequency response. This combined with no tweeters leaves owners with a flat muddy sound.

First thing is to replace the door speakers with something better, either a decent coaxial speaker or a component set with separate tweeter. After that you can upgrade the under seat speakers. A couple of choices here, either a replacement set of woofers or put a decent mid range in there that can blend with the small door speakers and then a proper sub in the boot. this option ideally powered by an amplifier for the whole system.

These days advances in driver technology allow a decent woofer to be placed in a car boot without taking up a lot ( If any ) boot space.

Thanks for the detailed answer, appreciated.

How much would you be looking at spending (roughly) to buy and install the kind of set up you're talking about?

Put a bit of sound deadening in behind the speakers (inside of the skin or whatever backing is available). This will improve the sound quality even if the speakers are not that great.
