RTE STILL showing material in the wrong aspect ratio.

I notice there's a thread over in the Television forum complaining about the version of the film 'The Field' that was shown on RTE 1 HD earlier.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057618953

I didn't see it myself, but it seems to have been a 4:3 print stretched to fill a 16:9 screen. I think this is basic incompetence by RTE and is actually treating those that pay their TV licenses with utter disrespect. It really shouldn't be happening imo.

Plus another point to note, is RTE EVER going to get its HD playout system in operation. Live matches of Euro 2016 are in HD, but pieces shown for analysis post match are still in upscaled SD.

They don't even show the year a film was released in the EPG where every other english provider I know does so nothing would surprise me.

On the SD channels, a flag is transmitted indicating whether the picture is 4:3 or 16:9, which your STB switches if you have it enabled, it definitely works over SCART anyway.

Because there is no 'switching power' in HDMI, the same doesn't happen on the 1080i channels viewed over HDMI. The simple solution here would be to transmit black bars down the side of the 1920x1080 picture to give an effective resolution of 1440x1080.

Also works over HDMI in SD picture modes. But some TVs, Samsung in particular, ignore the flag and don't automatically adjust the aspect ratio.

Pillarboxing is what most other HD channels do, but RTÉ don't seem to care. It is becoming more difficult to manually change the aspect ratio on newer TVs as they tend to not have a dedicated button on the remote any more - I have to go through several menus to change it on my 2014 Sony.

Why they can't do pillar boxing is a mystery alright. Some Sonys don't even allow 4:3 when in 1080 mode. Its only available for SD broadcasts.

As mentioned the flag is sent to switch to 4:3 when viewing over SCART.

If you set the STB HDMI Output to "Auto" I believe it also sends the flag but if the box is doing the upscaling it does not.

One solution is to pillarbox but if they pillarbox then people complain the picture doesn't fill the full screen and has black bars.

Same reason why films shot in 2.39:1 format are often Pan/Scanned to 16:9 format for TV rather than shown in letterboxed 16:9.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

They should prefer being damned for doing it right with pillar boxes so.

RTE should be damned for showing such a ropey old 4:3 copy.

RTE2 currently showing a film called the 'The Money's Uncle'. It's a 4:3 print stretched to fill a 16:9 screen.

UPC stopped doing this in their guide a while ago. Time was when you could press the 'info' button on the remote and one of the first items listed was the year, no longer.
