Yes. You can also take the card out and put it in a card reader if your laptop has one. You might have got a free adaptor that looked like a bigger memory card but has a slot for putting the SD card into, which in turn goes into the card slot on your laptop (most laptops have them). Load the phones as a usb device. If its an android phone there is an option on screen to connect as usb device. It will load two drives on your pc, one for the phones memory and one for the card. The cards one will be the empty one at the moment.

You have low level formatted the card. Do not use any other tools that will make it worse. The recovery software I linked to find file chunks not yet written over.

Follow the instructions. Some files found might have no extensions like jpeg. Just rename them with the file extension .jpg/jpeg in windows explorer. It will copy them to a directory on your c drive.

Recuva or Photorec will get most/all of your images back in most cases. Androids format will only delete the listing of where files are, not the actual data itself.

Why is this in AH again?

Do I need a card reader for this? Sorry useless with this stuff. So if I got a card reader I could slot it into the laptop and recover files that way?

Yes. If you dont have that option you can use the photorec software to recovery from a usb connected drive anyway (ie your phone via usb).

It keeps coming up as no drive found. I am going to fcking loose the head. so upset

Just relax, you can't do any more damage once you have the card taken out.

You could also try SanDisk rescue pro, it's what I use.

Is it really than expensive? What are your photos worth?

You could always wait and get someone else who you know who has the software do it for you.

It says no drive found please insert the external storage media when i tried connecting with USB, to recover pics. Photos are of my nephew when I first meet him so really personal and special

Aren't you an idiot for not backing up your stuff before doing any kind of formatting?

Or simply regularly backing up your stuff?

OK hang on... if you're using an S5 you're probably also using a Google account and so check Google Drive to see if they've been automatically backed up there

If you have any other cloud storage apps (OneDrive, Dropbox etc) installed then log into those as well as they too offer to automatically sync your photos

In fairness, in this day and age people should not be solely keeping important data on devices or cards.

Use cloud storage to back stuff up, it's cheap, often free and very easy.

I did the formatting by mistake after I updated my phone. It was an honest mistake.

A lot of my photos were backed up but some ones weren't. A few of them or of a late friend and the others or of my nephew who I just meet so it's recently important I get them back.

So SOOORRYYY if I thought it was dick move to tell me to format my SD card when I'd already lost everything. It really was

When has AH ever been about being helpful? They want help? then as was suggested at the start they should be in the photography or tech forums.

Jesus I panicked and I didn't know there was a photography forum and also wanted someone to get back to me ASAP so I figured AH was my best bet. No need to be so ratty

OP just relax, dont rise to the bait here.

As mentioned tho, Recuva is probably your best bet.

Install on a windows machine and connect the drive, select it and do a DEEP recovery ... it should get the pics back.

If not, still all is not lost , DONT USE THE CARD ! (this will truly overwrite current data) and bring it in to some place that will charge for a professional recovery - it's worth it if the photos are that valuable.

Ahh I know sure ive done the same, im just finding it funny that the other poster is seemingly annoyed not everyone is 100% helping in an AH thread

I agree. Not doing that was OP's mistake, which s/he may have learned never to make again.

I'm off to make sure my backups are up to date!

The latest update to the S5 does have a bizarre feature that makes no sense. Every time you turn the phone on it comes up with a bubble letting you know you have an SD card in with 2 options, either eject or format. Wtf is that all about? I don't need to be told I have an SD card in. I ****ing put it there.

    mod:
OP, I'd normally have moved this thread but I'm locking it instead. Because you seem to have two choices in the forum to ask your question and I can only move the thread to one of them.
    I would suggest this forum:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=9

With that being said, some people in the thread are trolling. AH isn't your personal forum to troll. So don't do it again.
