Hi I would love to get a custom trailer where a car is cut and used as a trailer.
I need 2.7 metres internal storahe length. I have no clue who might do this. Any ideas appreciated ? :D

Not really possible anymore I'm afraid, due to Type Approval regs that came in in October 2013.

Now technically, it may be possible, but you'd have to get IVA inspected by RSA before it goes on the road, and you'll need paperwork out the wazoo as well. Your new approved trailer will have as much paperwork, VIN plate etc etc as a car....

    It's just not economic anymore.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The Type Approval regulations apply if you are placing the trailer for sale as a manufacturer or retailer no? One off builds could not be subject to inspection. How would anybody know when it was built?

I would say it's possible to do OP, but you couldn't involve a fabricator or other professional for payment, otherwise you fall into the regulations. If you could do the work yourself to an acceptable standard I don't see how anybody could stop you.

    Guys thanks for the replies,
I really like the idea of doing this. It would meet my functional needs perfectly and could be really funky.

    According to the RSA:
"The technical and administrative requirements associated with IVA are less onerous those of NSSTA or ECWVTA".

So Realistically if making a "custom" trailer I would like it to be roadworthy (by the regulations) and would hope to keep it long term.

I am ignorant of all this stuff so I have the "advantage" that my naivety might allow me try and progress this where others see it as too painful.

Would anyone know who I could approach to do this work professionally?
Could a training college help and I would pay for it as I am in no rush.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

The Caddy one would be handy, it has a tow hitch attached so you could tow another trailer behind that one as well.:D

Thanks guys and the links form Done Deal are good. I need 2.7 metres length so I think they will be too short. Need something a little larger.
I'll keep an eye on DoneDeal though.

Probably look at cutting up a VW passatt estate or Audi Avant.

    Your're not gonna get 2.7m
Even large estates have well under 2m from boot to front seats.
But even if you managed to find something long enough, it would then be so nose heavy that you couldn't possibly tow it.
(very few vehicles that can take more than 100 kg direct weight on the towbar)

Your cheapest option would be to customise a cattle trailer most have over the 2.7m loadspace length you are after and they should be cheaper than a proper box trailer. Another more interesting option would be to gut an old caravan but they aren't as accessible for loading things into.
