I ordered some items from Australia totalling €95 euros. The company I purchased them from put the items value on the front of the package and also attached a detailed invoice to the front of the packet (half of the items were childrens clothing and therefore should not be subject to VAT).

My invoice from DHL stated that the goods cost €185 euros to which they proceeded to add €42 VAT, customs fees and €12.50 disbursement.

I have no idea where they got this goods value from, especially as the true value was on the packet in full view. I emailed them 8 days ago and have heard nothing back and I'm getting fed up. This I feel is a waste of my time because someone at that end wrote the wrong amount on the DHL invoice and now even though I've tried to rectify the situation they are ignoring my emails.

My only worry is that I will get a legal notice to pay this otherwise I would ignore it.

Has anyone had this problem before? Tx

Very common, many do not want to use them because of this common trick.

If the postage price was not declared they typically make up their own value, even though I expect they could easily figure out the cost using their own tracking numbers which must be all over the package.

So if the goods were €95 they might typically add €80 as a postage cost. In your case it could be €90 and so added would be €185 and vat is due on both the items and the postage.

You said "My invoice from DHL stated that the goods cost €185" are you certain of this? did it explicitly say the goods only. I am guessing it was the combined item and shipping costs, as you do not mention any VAT on the shipping.

Bump for this one, DHL at the usual here with a package Ii have for delivery. Total price inc shipping €140, but the seller never put a shipping price down so DHL have added their own of €85 so charging vat on total of €225 instead.

Argued the point over the phone and told tough luck its your own fault because the sender didn't include the cost, no option but to pay it. Has anyone had any joy sending in an invoice showing the total cost they really paid and having the invoice amended?

Whenever I see threads about DHL I mentally read them as DHhelL.

    From the DHL website:
"Under current regulations the cost of delivery is added to the declared value of the product to make the shipment`s "value for customs". If your shipper does not include the Freight Charge on the shipping invoice provided to DHL Express, then Customs will assign a transport charge based on DHL Express export rate to the origin country with a 30% discount. The Customs ruling on this is detailed in the attachment “Annex 25_Customs Explanation of Freight Charges”, and more information is available from Revenue at this link.

Old thread, but Ive just been shafted by DHL, something I ordered from China at 41 Euros, they are holding me to ransom for 39 Euros.

They detailed the Statistical Value at 109 Euros, took VAT on that, and added their handling fee.

One way to boost their profits I guess.

Do they have to return that VAT to the revenue? Am I entitled to a VAT invoice then?

Did your shipper show a value for shipping, or do what they usually do and leave it blank? If so, please see the post before yours which explains Customs procedure when this happens. The only profit here for the courier is the charge to clear customs. €12 or €15 to pay out VAT and duty on your behalf, do a customs entry etc, etc, etc. VAT and duty are payable to revenue, not a profit for he courier. DHL haven’t "shafted" you, your seller in their own stupidity did that. Customs will want the full whack of VAT and duty on the freight costs, especially if sent via an expensive courier. Next time tell them to use China Post, then you won't have this problem. An Post will charge €10 for the clearance etc.

You are entitled to an invoice and a copy of the customs entry which shows the calculation.

I got a copy after, they used 68 euros as carriage costs.

Ah yeah, personally I'd argue that and show them your receipt.

I had DHL "estimate" the shipping costs before on an item that was free shipping.
