Technophobe basic TV question

I already have a Virgin package in the front room and want to put a tv in the kitchen.

Would be happy with just Irish channels in the kitchen so what do I need - a new tv and someone to set up a saorview aerial? What price should it be roughly?

I didn't find the saorview website very informative. When looking for installers I found a few sites offering no bills tv with equivalent channels to those offered by sky and virgin. Do all of these options require a satellite dish, and are they legal?

Depending on your location, you may get away with a set top/indoor aerial for Saorview. If your Tv is relatively new it should be Saorview compatible. Unless you are within range of a UK transmitter, near the border or parts of the East coast, you would need a satellite dish for the UK channels. The basic UK channels such as BBCs, ITVs, CH4, CH5 etc are freely available by satellite. Sky channels, Discovery channels, Nat Geo etc need a subscription.

Thanks - I'm in Dundrum, Dublin. Do you think the indoor aerial would work? Are they big? How much should the basic saorview installation cost?

    sorry for all the questions!

Installer recommendation, Tony from http://www.satellite.ie/ is a regular contributor here and is based in Tallaght.

You will be able to pick up a reasonably priced Saorview TV in Powercity, some come with a built in satellite tuner e.g. http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-11-WPS2414 (satellite dish required for the satellite channels and aerial for the Saorview channels)

Alternatively, a Freesat sat receiver for the Freesat channels e.g. http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-24-340183

In Dundrum you are very near the 3Rock mast so it is worth trying a cheap indoor aerial from a Euro shop. Dont bother with boosted or amplified aerials, they're a con. As The Cush mentions, it is worth having a chat with Tony from Satellite.ie. I've no connection to him other than as a satisfied customer.

A splitter for the Virgin Media feed and running a cable to the second room will get you the 15 analogue channels that are still available from Virgin media.

Irish channels, BBC 1/2, UTV, C4, e4, Sky 1, Living , Sky News, Discovery, Mtv, Paramount/Nicklodeon.

Saorview will only get Irish channels albeit in better quality than VM analogue.

Thanks for analogue tip - the Virgin guy mentioned it when he came on Saturday. I thought analogue was gone, confirming I know nothing about this.

NO HE DOESN'T. Did you not read post 5 about amplified indoor aerials? They are a waste of time, money, and electricity as well as being a con. Also why would he need an aerial with additional VHF elements?

MODERATOR, please note this offensive uncalled for language.

I repeat amplified indoor aerials are a waste of time, money, and electricity. A non amplified one will work just as well.

A tv with a chromecast and cast tv (iplayers or virgin horizon go (I think it's called)) from your phone/tablet.

I for one don't agree that it's 'uncalled for' language, it's a well deserved comment on someone who makes it his calling in life to correct people when they misspell the word 'aerial'.

It's about time someone told you where to get off - most of your posts in this forum are irritating nitpicking crap.

Well one works for me as well, where a non-amplified one would'nt.

BTW are you moaning to the Mod as a result of being pulled up over your ariel/aerial fiasco???:D:D:D
