Why do people give permission?

Just watching "Can't pay, we'll take it away". It's basically a programme about dept collectors. Why would the people who are obviously shown being evicted, allow the footage be shown of them on the telly? I presume the programme makers would need consent to show their face.

I don't watch that program but no they don't need to give permission all they can do is ask them to stop filming them. Do they go into their house? If so the owner can ask them to leave

They are paid for their time and appearance, of course.

Because people are so obsessed with getting their mugs on the TV, they will do anything these days.

Just look at those people who have a nasty rash on their sack, but were too embarassed to go see their GP about it. Instead I'll come on TV and let a couple of million see it.

    Interesting tidbit:
In the first few seasons of COPS nearly every criminals face was blurred. When the shows producer was asked about how come so many people would give permission to show their face in later seasons, he simply shrugged it off and said "15 minutes of fame" - As once COPS was on the air a couple of years people would agree. You would be amazed how stupid people can be.

Also, in regards to all these reality type "you broke the law shows" (for a lack of a better term) you really are only seeing the cherry picked bits. If some idiot agrees to allow his or her face on cam you will most certainly see it on tv. Most people who refuse to show their face get their recordings left on the cutting room floor. Unless there is something interesting that warrents to be included in the episode.

Sometimes shows blur out faces but they don't have to do this they aren't obliged to do it

I seen prank TV show one night and it showed a guy coming out of a set shop without his face blurred who ran away but blurred out other people's faces in less embarrassing sotuiations

In all those prank shows, they get permission. Always retrospectively. I think most people with a sense of humour will go with it.

I wouldn't care about getting pranked as I would see the funny side but I'm too private to have it shown on tv.

I only ever once had to give a tv interview as part of my job for a feature on a mainstream news-related programme. My male friend kept saying he could see down my top. Sure enough when I was given a copy by the producer it didn't have my name caption and my top button was gaping wide open  Thank god for tv captions.

This. If they're filming in public, there's no obligation to blur out anyone's faces.

However, there's always scope for someone to bring a breach of privacy case. Or a defamation case by claiming that the show was deliberately edited to make it look like you did or said something you didn't.

Blurring out faces is cheap and easy, and bypasses any legal headaches.

When they go into someone's house, they cannot show that footage without the resident's permission, same for a private business.

Most shows just wave some cash under people's noses to get them to sign. In the repossession show, anyone who is on it is in a dire financial situation so the producers probably offer to cover some expenses and get them out of a hole.

A lot of the people on it seem to be really belligerant and defiant and first and then calm down and pay up - probably five minutes after the cameras were turned off and a £5k payment was offered in a contract.

These types of programmes are shown in the mornings deliberately to let the working class know who's boss
