The mother and father are pushing on and have a standard car that is killing them getting in and out of it. They have 8-10k to spend on a straight deal and want something with a bit of height.

    Their criteria are:
08 upwards despite all the arguments I have had over the folly of this.
Must be a step into and out of vehicle. Both of them have hip replacements.
Economical to run. State pension is their income.

Not necessarily stuck on an suv, peugeot 3008 type vehicles may do.
Contenders off the top of my head are qashqai, rav4, sportage, old model tuscon, 3008, tiguan.

What am I missing and what can the good folks of boards motors recommend to me?

You have picked the best so bring your parents to look at said vehicles and see what is best for their situation.
Kia gets very good reviews but i think its down to personal choice. They are all good in their own way.

    Will they be within budget?

Also consider Opel Meriva, my parents (in their 70's) are very happy with theirs

their budget could get them a 2012 one

    Skoda Yeti.
Parents just bought one last week.
Very easy access with wide opening doors, seats at good height for getting in/out.

Where's the folly in not wanting a car to be more than eight years old?

I believe he's referring to the tax rates

A Nissan Note has height and spacious inside - economical too

Forget about the new Tiguain , its a mini-bus and you cant see much through the back window

It would be the older tiguan. 10k is the max I'm afraid.

Colleague of mine had similar criteria and also tested Hyundai, Kia and Qashqai and after testing all the above decided to try a Kuga and found it miles better. This is slightly over budget, but at least it won't have some miserable, wheezy 1.5 in it.

Suzuki SX4 - a bit smaller than some listed but spacious inside

The mother has written them off as she thinks they are slightly too big for her for parking etc. Their footprint is not a lot different to a qashqai but it seems bigger. I love their styling though personally.

Also look at moving to automatic - my mum did that (80's) and loves how much easier it is.

    Plenty of auto quasqai about.

Another to look at is the Nissan Juke.

:) - wife said no to juke cos she only saw auld ones in them - might have been because so many American tourists get them as hire cars.

You should see 2011 ones close to 10k - 45mpg and 280 tax.

What did they get in the end? I know it's bad when a 23 ye old has the same car taste as 2 pensioners.

Also the juke looks like one of those learner roller blades IMHO
