    ...that can help me out.

    A little background here.

    I am from the USA and have been driving since I was 14. I am now 32. I have lived in Ireland for 5 years now and have been driving over here for 4 of those years. The first year of driving here I was using an international drivers permit and was able to be insured as such. But the insurance company would not allow the IDP to be used and the insurance renewed after 1 year of use.

    I started the process to get my Irish drivers license at that point. I have my permit now for 3 years and I have done 6 hours of the required 12 hours of drivers training to get a full license.

    Full disclosure: I think this process of licensing in Ireland is a total racket. The fact that I can't just get a license over here bugs me. I get the whole "other side of the road" thing, but Germans or other continentals come over and can swap out their licenses without the cost and training requirements I have to endure and they drive on the same side of the road as the USA. It's a racket to take my 800 for the whole process.

    In my previous 6 hours of training I was made certain that I could take the test tomorrow and pass. The remaining 6 hours are just a waste of my time.

    <SNIP>

    Thanks.

    Thurman

    MOD: OP I have edited your thread. It is illegal for an ADI to sign off lessons which aren't completed. Asking people to do things like that is against the forum charter.

    The European standards are similar, that's why they are allowed to swap their licences, but they don't in fact have to swap them. An EU licence is valid in the EU. The USA is not in the EU. It's obviously nothing to do with the sides of the road. It's to do with training standards.
    There's not many EU countries below the US in terms of road deaths
