Guardianship +inheritance before divorce

My partner (male) was married to a woman who had a little girl ( not biological to him) before the marriage and then subsequently they had two more children together after the marriage. They are now legally separated for several years. Even with a Will in place, does he have to obtain guardianship rights to his 'daughter' for inheritance rights in order to obtain a divorce?. The relationship between him and his ex wife is very cordial and DIY divorce would be the easiest and cheapest option. My question is , does this issue have to be resolved before a divorce can he obtained? Also, the daughter will be 18 years old in a few months time. Will this even be necessary when she turns 18?? Please help. Thank you!
