My Sky subscription ends in October and doubt ill be renewing as the price and usage arent worth the monthly fee. Im interested in going down the route of getting a box that will give me the same range of channels,a decent EPG and the ability to record programs. Can anyone point me in a possible direction?

You're not going to get the same range of channels sub free.

Possible options include Freesat for the FTA satellite channels, Saorview for the Irish channels. Both have their own receivers with record, 7 day guide etc.

Those things are used as a means of piracy for the most part. Very few services available here that you can use with them such as Netflix and Spotify. The stuff mentioning Kodi is heavily dependent on add-ons. Which can't really be discussed here.

When you unsubscribe from sky, you can still use the sky box for freeview stuff.

The zgemma star 2s is the best more pricey but has an excellent TV guide 7day epg pause rewinding live tv. Record one channel and watch another at the same time . they can also be made multi room.

The Zgemma are cheap chinese cloned boxes. They are the worst box on the market.
