Grill is warm, not hot

Zanussi oven, approx 5 years old. Grill no longer heats properly (last week ). In other words, it gets a little hot but doesn't glow orange and get very hot. The food will cook albeit irritatingly slowly. Anyone got an idea what might be the issue?

if the element heats a certain amount highly unlikely its faulty, try swopping over one of the knobs to exclude a knob slipping on the switch shaft otherwise a faulty regulator switch
