P21 underpayment query

Hi - I unknowingly received rent credit from 2011-2014 according to my PAYE Balancing P21 Statements.

I didn't realise I had to tell them I stopped renting and I'm not one for thoroughly checking the fineprint. I am a primary teacher. I stopped renting at the start of 2011 and didn't know I was supposed to alert anyone - I am genuine and not trying to avoid tax as I have already gone to the tax office and they told me to make adjustments online.

I duly made the necessary changes online now my underpayment on each of my P21 forms for the past 4 years is 312, 578, 226 and 266= 1382 - amI right in thinking that I now need to pay back 1382? Any help greatly appreciated.

Any help greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.

In theory yes if that is showing as an underpayment on the P21. However Revenue aren't unreasonable and you can work with them to get them to reduce your tax credits over the next year so you repay it that way rather than a lump sum repayment.

That's very high for just the rent credit. Or are you receiving an over 55 or married rate?

Did you claim medical expenses previously that now aren't showing on the P21.

Did you claim the flat rate expenses for teachers?

Thanks for the reply - I just needed to know that 1382 is the amount I owe them - thanks for the clarification.

As the previous poster has stated the removal of the rent credit alone should not result in that much of a refund. I would double check the reasoning behind that much of a jump.
