I am looking at a passat1.9 TDI (08) to buy, dealer said to me bring it off for the weekend and see what I think of it.

So I did, got it checked at a local mechanic who noticed that theirs a golf engine been put into the passat as it's tippexed onto engine.

The mechanic says it should be fine, I am very sceptical of it though before buying as everything seems to be ok within the car itself after been checked thoroughly.

Just be aware there could be any mileage on the engine.

It says timing belt done at 220km dated 02/02/16.

I dunno, I'd be wary but sure if it's cheap enough. Engines go, it's an 8 year old car, and this one probably is in OK shape and has a recent belt.

He has it up for 6,950, two Cv boots gone in it that's all.

Because a golf is a lot smaller car than a passat, would u thibk make any difference?

I don't know much about cars, just sceptical abou spending that money.

Also he's given no warranty on vehicle.

No, they'd essentially be the same 1.9 TDI 105 bhp engine, one thing that might be of concern is the engine code on the replacement engine. I'm not too up on vws but there are a few engines like the BXE variant that can go catastrophically wrong. They're fitted to the golf but not the Passat. Might be worth checking as the engine's off a Golf.

So is the seller a garage?

At that price you should be getting some form of warranty, if not walk away.

A garage retailing a car and not giving warranty is a red flag for me. That said its not that new a car.

It's not but he is looking too much for it sans warranty.

The BXE are fitted to passats. My thinking about this car is the engine probably was a BXE and gave up and was replaced by the golf engine

Ok, as I say I'm not too up on them :) either way, worth checking what's in there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 Biffo1991

    Ya that's the one their.

Also clock has 223km, and tested on 09-03-16 at 215 km.

Also engine bay has timing belt done at 220km on 2-2-16.

So there's a discrepancy somewhere. I think I will leave it as no warranty

Isn't that dealer a salvage dealer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 Biffo1991

He is indeed, but a seller aswell.

Well you have to consider that the majority of cars coming into him that is selling probably may be salvaged in some shape or fashion. Just saying.

Also what would the point be in buying from a dealer who is not offering a warranty? The whole point buying from a dealer is the peace of mind of a warranty.

Wouldn't let it put me off. Same engine at the end of the day. If the writing had to have been cleaned off you never would have known anyway :D
