    National Aquathlon Championships 2016

Hats off to Olympian Triathlon Club for a very well-organised race today in Castlewellan, in the foot of the Mourne mountains. Its an ideal setting for an aquathlon: parking, registration, etc was a breeze. Speaking of breezes, a strong wind from the West created a fair bit of chop on the surface. Kids races got to swim out into the chop, and then turn for home. It suited the stronger swimmers- but get 'em used to chop early and they will be strong Irish swimmers of the future. Loads of marshals and kayaks looking after these young aquathletes, who were brave racing in tough conditions.

The water temp wasn't too bad, thought it would be colder. Our adult swim was changed to a point-to-point with the wind in our backs (booo), but the course seemed a little longer than the advertised km, so swings and roundabouts.

The run was a trail loop of the lake, with a nasty up-and-down a sharp hill added to make up the 5km distance. I think the day suited strong swimmers rather than strong runners.

1st male: Harry Speers (Invictus TC)
    2nd: Brian Harris (Wicklow TC)
    3rd: Odhran McKane (NW TC)
1st female: Carolyn Hayes (Limerick TC)
    2nd: Heather Foley (Olympian TC)
    3rd: Orla Walsh (unattached)

Overall a top class event, loads of helpers and officials and marshals who all played their part in making this race such a success.
